Show your birch / betula

This should be a fun one to play with. Rolled the dice and dug a bunch of birch stumps this sping with basically no roots. They all grew like champs. Apparently you can flat cut birch a few inches below ground level if you dig at the right time, big cuttings ftw.

Thought for sure I'd get sprouts higher up the trunk on this one but instead I got a dozen plus shoots in the first 2-3 inches. Future shohin broom I presume. Need to get in there next spring, chop it down to size, select branches and do a little carving. Going to be a bushy little birch one day.

Noob question. Do the leaves on a River Birch turn yellow in the fall or do I have another issue?

I believe yellow is the normal color of birch leaves. As chlorophyll moves out of the leaves in the fall it reveals the true leaf color. Caveat; if the leaves are coming out yellow or turn yellow when it’s not fall you could have an iron deficiency. I had one turn yellow in spring and had to emergency repot because I’m dumb, but it survived. My air layers went yellow right after I cut them off, but they also survived. Are the local river birch trees going yellow? I have a bunch of birches and they all turn at pretty much the same time so I have something to gauge their individual health.

Good question. I've seen some trees changing on my drive to work, mostly maples, gonna have to swing by the river soon & check it out. Thank you.

Felt a little brainstormy, then after I finished I realized theres no way I will ever have a birch with compacted foliage like that, hahaha.

Edit: Added a more realistic expectation
