Mature western hemlock stands are excellent places to view mushrooms, especially conks. There’s a reason they are unaffectionately called “hemrot”.

I had to snatch this before I had a good look first

Pretty, but up close, maybe not for the pan

Hen of the Woods already had a flush around here, but then we got a blast of heat and they all dried out. More rain and cooler weather this week, so hopefully more of those soon. For the average novice forager, hen season is what I’d suggest starting with, so go looking!

Nice! I’m heading to my hen spot in a couple weeks. A lot of old maples and oaks still standing there
