Shimpaku from Evergreen Gardenworks

It’s been a few years since I’ve paid much attention to this tree. It has not been exceptionally healthy because it has spent more time in shade than sun. I moved it out to get more sun and hopefully that will help it gain strength. It really needs to be repotted next spring too.

Today I removed the wire applied (yikes) 3+ years ago, and did some pruning to give the interior more light. After scrubbing bark, it got a fresh coat of lime sulfur.

After…completely unwired and still a hot mess:

Playing around with cutting that left branch that appears from the top. If I do this, I can tighten the foliage on the left, the. set the movement and apex all to the right. I think it will make for a better bonsai down the road.

I might consider taking the design in the other direction if you think you can beef up the descending branch on the left. The more you would then shorten the branch on the right, the more power you would add to the design. You would also refine the apex so that it is clearly leading to the left and is centered over the nebari.

Interesting, thanks for the suggestion.
