Trying to come up with a title...as, this is actually the third JM, I own with scars on the trunk. 🙃

Yeah...I know...deciduous tree and all. But that's quite okay by me. 😉😁

My latest...arrival.

There is nothing like a good scarred up tree, in my opinion they are the best. That’s a very good looking maple, you have some really cool trees in your collection.
Well...we are of like mind then on scars. 😉... Thank ya kindly on the compliment of my collection.

I've gone back and forth so many times on what a tree should look like. Scars/no scars, extent of movement etc. I think the tree is awesome. Looks old and wise.
Thanks... I've always loved a scarred trunk. Give me a URO over healing a scar any day.

That said...I can appreciate those who work towards such a tree with no scars. But I spend more time looking at a tree with character added.

To me...it makes them stand out next to the rest.

Cool trunk! I personally love deciduous trees with scars, deadwood, uro.

What is the back story on this tree?
Back story...collected 7 years or so back... in the ground at a nursery. They needed cleared. Some trees were gathered unharmed. Some...they had to whack at to get them out. This is one of those who survived the hacking.

My first reaction on seeing this tree is that you are being too safe/too traditional. The scar is a very strong design element. You are styling the rest of the tree like a traditional bonsai... but not like what a tree in the wild would look like. I love the scarred trunk - now design the rest of the tree to be equally contorted/tortured.

🙃... just unpacked it today. 😉

That said...here is some amazing specimen maples with scars. I truly am inspired by trees owned by ones across the pond. His came to mind first for the maples.

And a grand ol' lady...her trunk is amazing...a Sloe.

What?! I thought you had been growing it for a while :) When I read the story about the nursery I assumed you were the one digging up the tortured trees :)
No...that was the back history. As I did ask on it. All three scarred maples are new to me. One did come last fall. But the the other and this one...this year.

I'll try and create threads...when I've time. 😉

Love the grisly trunk.

Dan Robinson would say, “ That’s a really good start towards creating an ancient gnarly maple bonsai!”
Looking forward to future posts.

Thanks... it's loaded with gnarly. That's a fact. 😉🙂

For sure. Might want to pomder on how to expand the upper two scarred areas to continue the vibe of the lower scarred area expanding on @Bonsai Nut previous comments. Likely take a couple whacks over time.

Too bad you are so far away, my Drexel and Makita die grinders are chopping at the bit 😉

Best,

I'm thinking the scar technique Cosmic design uses for the branches...without all the twisting chaos. Not that I don't intend to use it on a tree elsewhere. I am intrigued by it.

I'm not sure I wish to do that where the weight of the canopy needs strength in the trunk to hold it up. [Altering the current trunk]

Worth some thought. Don’t see why it won’t hold the canopy, properly designed. They don’t call maples hardwoods feor nothing.

As always, your tree your choice.😎. You a comment form the Peanut Gallery….

cheers

Right...I happen to love what is there. That's the thing. Sure more could be done. But...for me...I love the movement and texture in the scars there.

I love it survived and the story. If I go carving it out...then I alter it. I would prefer it's story not altered in the trunk. That's me. I'm a sucker for stories.

Especially...artists/potters. I've got a commissioned pot from Dan Barton being done. Because his story is fascinating. One so...heart grabbing. I won't share it. As it isn't my place to tell.
