New Bonsai Chinese elm

Okay, so I guess you can buy premixed bonsai soil that is basically the same as I described above. It’s “Boon’s Mix” named for bonsai master, Boon Manakavitipart. Available online at Amazon or Superfly Bonsai.

Well I appreciate the fact that they put the soil components right there on the package. An excellent solution if you live in an area that doesn't have access to the materials. For example, I can get red lava pretty cheap, but not black lava. I don't think there is a functional difference... but black lava looks cooler :)

I am happy to report that my elm is growing like a weed, it's been less than a week and I already see new growth.

At the nursery I bought it at, it was getting filtered sun and in a quite humid indoor/outdoor room. It's been in full sun since a day or two ago. I think it's happier with all the sun it's getting.

It's normal for new leaves to come in slightly red-green, right?

No, actually seven trees is just the start. You need 100.

5 nice trees in nice pots for display.
10 decent trees in final refinement in Chinese pots.
25 trees in large Anderson flats growing like mad that you are getting ready to move into pots... in 1-3 years.
60 trees in large pond baskets or in the ground in early development.

If you have a lot of trees, you can be patient with them. If you only have a few, it is easy to kill them with kindness - by constantly messing with them.

That said, you always need to have a handful that are "finished" trees in pot on nice benches or stands... because otherwise your yard will look like an unkempt nursery!

I will happily wait here until the day you say "You know what? You were right!"

The first step in recovery is acknowledging... you have a problem. I have over 100 trees... and maybe 200 if I stopped to count. I know people who have over 600 :) Actually now that I think of it, I have somewhere around 75 JBP seedlings that I am growing for the 6 year JBP contest. They are taking up about 12 square feet, more or less :)

I got into bonsai because I can fit more trees in my over-planted yard! 100 is within reach.

I had a few old leaves turn yellow and drop off but new growth is still emerging. I've been watering almost daily except the days where it's overcast and humid. The soil was still damp so I didn't water it those days.

I read that this might be heat stress. It was overcast and humid for a couple days and then boom yesterday was hot and dry. I didn't see the yellow leaves until this morning.

Any ideas for what's going on?

This is normal mine always seem to be dropping a few old leaves here and there.

Aren't there any clubs or associations near where you live?

I mean, B-Nut is a very valuable source of info (and the rest ) but you'll learn ten times faster if you join a group of bonsai enthusiasts.

It can be worth an hour's drive once or twice in a month. Really.

Yeah, there are. They don't meet again until September 10th for non members. I'm eagerly awaiting that meeting.

Until then, I thought I could ask questions here and share my enthusiasm for my new hobby. Thanks for making me feel like I can't

Pictures are always helpful - and oftentimes necessary - in order to properly diagnose the problem :)

Is it the leaves on the inside of the shoot/branch, i.e. closest to the trunk? Sometimes mine will do this if I let it go too long without pruning. If it’s healthy it will backbud readily once you shorten the shoot appropriately.
