New additions

Thats cool. I've been collecting Bald Cypress too. I donated $10 to the Arbor Day Foundation and they're seeing me 10 Bald Cypress bare root trees. Figured that was cheap enough. I've been getting them from nurseries in 15g-25g containers. Now I'll just start taking cuttings in the summertime. I need to find a spot to dig some out in the wild. I'm in a populated area of Florida and haven't really found a good spot to dig some up yet. I'm going to get on Google Maps and try to find a spot to dig this weekend.

I'm digging the bald cypress, nice, either to grow out or to make a small shohin or next size up tree. I'd cut the base flat, get rid of the lower part below the roots. Nice, it has some taper.

The JBP is good enough starter material, needs 4 to 10 years in nursery pot or grow out flat or grow box. You'll need to work it twice a year or more during that time, but if you do, it can become respectable. And the price was good.

Thanks for the info Leo. As for the BC, would you cut it flat to the red line?IMG_0286_Ink_LI.jpg

If it were my tree, I would just cut the big root off and save as many feeder roots as I could. The roots can always be pruned back in the future. I would cut the tap root back hard too. I think I see a tap root.

I hope you didn't Cut it yet!

I'd leave it as is...
Just put a wire in that highest wide spot to layer up to later.

Let it keep all its roots for now!

No cutting yet. I just ended up potting it up last night. I'll wait to the spring to mess with it.

did you bare root these right now? It's not the time to repot BC plus we have a lot of freezing weather coming up. Though they are dormant now it's still a little too early to be doing that. It may be ok as BC are tough but I would have waited, don't let it dry out as that's a death sentence.

This is where I would cut based on these pics

This how I got it in the mail last night. I just put it in a pot and will make sure to keep the soil wet. I'm also keeping this guy in the unheated garage til spring. I hope thats ok.

Unheated garage should be fine, just avoid freezing it.

I would cut flat a bit lower than your red line. Look at how the trunk continues to get wider, flare out, below your red line, I would chop just a little bit below the point where the trunk stops getting wider. But you got the right idea.
