My little mugo

Nice! Is the first pic the front? I think this tree has 3 workable fronts. Although the initial thinking was to do a sort of semi cascade, I really like the sort of formal/informal upright look in pic 1.

Rob

My initial thought and one I still think I like most is pic three. Have to look at it some more.

I like this mugo I bought 7 just to work on them. Can't wait to style my first pine

A little action since the chop.

At some point you are going to have to deal with another Mugo problem; they can back bud like crazy. In this case you need to be concerned about what you need to develop your design and start removing those things that are not necessary to it.

Whorls. Got any tips on removing growth on mugos?

Whorls. Got any tips on removing growth on mugos?

You encourage growth below the whorls. With care it is possible to cut a branch or limb on the short side of a whorl/knuckle. Try not to incorporate one of these features in a design if it can be avoided. It is true that as a tree ages their visual dominance will diminish but it takes years, and it is better when possible to develop growth without them.

I was out looking at the Mugo yesterday. Is it too late to start removing the small branches? And can you explain what you mean about removing from the short side? It is still growing actively and is very healthy.

It would be nice and helpful if you included the context of the above quote.

That being said it is not too late to remove branches it is in fact a good time.

Sorry Vance. You had said to remove branches from the short side of the whorl and I'm afraid I don't understand exactly what you mean by the "short side".

If all the branches are coming out of the same whorl I want to select which will be best for future branching. Due to my inexperience I'm not sure which to select for removal and which are best to leave. They are all the same size and a few have a new shoot coming off lower down the branch closer to the whorl.

Is what I am saying making any sense?

Boy talk about a critical typo, the quote shoud have read: Cut to branches short of the whorl. In other words if you have branches below the whorle or knuckle cut to them as replacements.

Gotcha. Unfortunately no branches below the whorl.

In this case you want to remove all but two of the branches emerging from that growth. With luck this will stimulate back budding below the knuckle and there you go; problem solved.

Thanks Again Vance,

I just want to confirm this time of year is ok to remove that much growth?

Figure I'd update the thread as it's the start of the season and buds are starting to move. Got some back buds on the interior.

Way to go. Fun arn't they? When they start doing what their supposed to do it really makes things rewarding. Just pay attention to where they are going. Don't try to pre judge the outcome, roll with the punches.

And thanks to you for giving advice and lending me your knowledge.

Nybonsai, thats looking nice! It looks like a JBP with a nice trunk, something you'd have to pay $300 for. I bet it fills out even nicer this year too.

With shorter and nicer needles and better ramification.
