MY GARDEN, SHARE YOURS

I did a near complete redesign of the bonsai area of our gardens. The garden felt cramped and never felt right. I had black mulch as the garden's surface. The rest of our garden has a couple of different types of stone. Sunday and yesterday, I tore everything out and put down landscape fabric. The first picture is after I took out an old grow bed. The next few pics are of the finished area. The only new gravel is in the bonsai area proper. Everything else was done over the last couple of years. The gravel was delivered and dumped onto my driveway. My driveway is on the other side of the house and downhill so I had to wheel barrel everything over (I'm in my mid 60s) The next pics are a few of the rest of our garden/yard, including the vegetable area that adjoins the bonsai area. Everything is landscaped and designed to flow into the next area. There is also a random pic of our garden gate, the footboard of an old bed that I repurposed. Edit: after hitting post, the pictures posted out of order.

I don’t do greenhouses anymore 🥲. The future Santa Fe bonsai studio.

Hopefully soon Richard Lee will be back to tie it all together. It takes an Asian to put zen in Santa Fe.
Looks like a very Japanese style home foundation. Hopefully there will be some awesome joinery work done with the structure.

A shot of what I’ve got on “benches” so far. Winter was rough on my sunroom and I lost multiple screen wall panels. Maybe it’s a sign that it’s time to finally build my Japanese screens and start an actual garden. I’d like to pick up woodworking again in some manner. My son’s design major friends are excited to help, but their design ideas and my budget aren’t on the same page yet. I also suffer from paralysis by analysis, so I have a mess for now.

Are they doing the landscape design or the design on the sunroom/wall panels? I found it helpful to install my garden's hardscape before the landscape plants. Maybe deciding on just a layout would let you start installing benches before deciding the rest of it looks like?

Kind of Both, with a focus on the landscaping. I would pay them for their time (and keep the beer flowing), but the bigger costs are the actual materials. Doing it in parts is probably the best idea. And I already have a number of nursery maples from my early bonsai days that I didn’t totally massacre. Everyone’s beautiful garden pics here are getting me motivated.
