These air layers were separated July, 28 2025 and have all responded very well with lots of new growth. The extensive die back on the original apex was unfortunately a result of pruning just prior to air layer separation. Oops, I assume too many cuts for the minimal root base.

The base obviously needs to grow and develop branching. But I'm wondering if any work can or should be done with the other trees or should they all be left to grow and maybe start styling work next spring. This is the biggest air layer project that I have ever done. I'm wondering about the large branches on the two bigger trees, can they be used by cutting back to new growth or is the diameter just to big. Any guidance or advice would be greatly appreciated.

After separation I would allow at least a full growing season before beginning any major work Even in California.
Thank you for your reply, that's what I was thinking. I have struggled with maples, probably lack of patience trying to rush things along. Looking forward to next season.
