Also— totally agree about listing things with “Nao Tokutake's wife, Mary Lai”
it would've been a whole lot better if they had just reversed the subordinate clause. and not mentioned Nao twice but Mary once! Also— totally agree about listing things with “Nao Tokutake's wife, Mary Lai”
I don't really understand Olive bonsai. They look like stumps with waterspouts/suckers growing out of them...
I think we sold Ryan this pot in person for $175. That one is especially special because Nao hand built a unique shape and glazed it kutani style which he hasn’t done lately or ever will again, and I added the quail.View attachment 504826
This pot is pretty sweet.

Well I hope you take it as a compliment when I say that the pot is 85% of the value of that particular piece. I love the whimsical energy of your pots, they remind me of Satomi Terahata!I think we sold Ryan this pot in person for $175. And I am so happy to see a bunch of Bnutters feel the same way as me. I have been struggling hardcore lately being ‘just a mom’ ‘so and so’s wife’. Loss of identity is a real thing women deal with, can’t have a career or individual identity and be a mom at the same time. Just, if I ever get in a fatal accident or something, I want the news article to say Painter of cute chickens and quail dies in blahblah fashion not Mother from Hillsboro or whatever.![]()
Beautiful pots! Nao will be flattered. He did the glazing, I added a bewildered quail. Btw, those vertical lines on pots are really stupid hard to do.. I love and appreciate the limed pots by Satomi the best.Well I hope you take it as a compliment when I say that the pot is 85% of the value of that particular piece. I won’t post another seller link here but can’t help since you love limber pines . Check what Bjorn has for saleI was a fan of the limber pines. Little beyond my budget, though. By a factor of, roughly, fifty.
This is the first legitimately fair criticism leveled at the listings. This is disappointing. Mary is her own person. I understand the marketing value of connecting her to Nao, but this is not how you do that.

Of course you can and you're killing it!can’t have a career or individual identity and be a mom at the same time.
I think we have finally reached the point where Ryan/Mirai has more trees than they can work on at his high level. A lot of these look like they haven't had much work done to them or like the olives, he is looking to get rid of a certain species. The nicest to me are the redwoods and some of the native junipers.
I'm extremely surprised anyone bought those two maples at those prices. I don't believe the estimated ages of 40 years, these both look like cuttings unless I'm completely missing something with the growth rate on this variety.
Overall, a meh listing this year compared to prior years.
As it should be. If Ryan can't command a premium compared to some rando on Facebook, then all of his training, and efforts have been wasted. Bonsai is art. The care and skill provided by a known quantity imparts value on its own.Let's call it what it is - those maples were snapped up because (1) they are the lowest priced items available, and (2) they are Ryan Neil/Mirai trees. People can spin it however they want but if one of us put those trees up on a facebook auction site, no one would pay those prices.
I do see signs of significant age on those maples. Specifically, the trunks are gray at the bottom and going up quite some distance. Young sango kaku branches are red and it takes quite a long time for them to develop mature gray bark. It takes long enough that my sango kaku, which I've had for several years now, has yet to develop any gray bark above the graft union. Exactly how long it takes, I'm not sure. I've seen gray bark on some more mature (and much more expensive sango kaku at the nursery, but I don't know how old they were). That said, those maples don't appeal to me, personally, in an aesthetic sense. Just not my cup of tea. But then, I'm into sumo trunks, not slender and delicate.I'm extremely surprised anyone bought those two maples at those prices.
