Mirai tree sale

Also— totally agree about listing things with “Nao Tokutake's wife, Mary Lai”
it would've been a whole lot better if they had just reversed the subordinate clause. and not mentioned Nao twice but Mary once!

oh well, both of them are on this forum and I will refrain from getting more upset until they chime in.

This pot is pretty sweet.
I think we sold Ryan this pot in person for $175. That one is especially special because Nao hand built a unique shape and glazed it kutani style which he hasn’t done lately or ever will again, and I added the quail.

And I am so happy to see a bunch of Bnutters feel the same way as me. I have been struggling hardcore lately being ‘just a mom’ ‘so and so’s wife’. Loss of identity is a real thing women deal with, can’t have a career or individual identity and be a mom at the same time. Just, if I ever get in a fatal accident or something, I want the news article to say Painter of cute chickens and quail dies in blahblah fashion not Mother from Hillsboro or whatever. 😂

Well I hope you take it as a compliment when I say that the pot is 85% of the value of that particular piece. I love the whimsical energy of your pots, they remind me of Satomi Terahata! ;)

Beautiful pots! Nao will be flattered. He did the glazing, I added a bewildered quail. Btw, those vertical lines on pots are really stupid hard to do.. I love and appreciate the limed pots by Satomi the best.

Price aside! There is some great trees up for sale.
Awesome trees, with alot of great features:

Somehow I didn’t connect with any of the trees for sale 😢 Am a big fan of Mirai especially as a learning platform and I have enjoyed past sales .

But somehow this sale - trees seemed not of the same high quality that Mirai is associated with and prices seem quite high for the quality offered . I understand that many or almost all of the pots were of highest quality possible but what good does a pot do if the tree housed in it doesn’t have the same potential . I don’t mind the price of 5 figures if it can be justified with the quality of tree . But somehow none seemed to be worthy of the asking price if you just remove the pot :(

But again , what do I know as am just a stupid novice …

I think we have finally reached the point where Ryan/Mirai has more trees than they can work on at his high level. A lot of these look like they haven't had much work done to them or like the olives, he is looking to get rid of a certain species. The nicest to me are the redwoods and some of the native junipers.

I'm extremely surprised anyone bought those two maples at those prices. I don't believe the estimated ages of 40 years, these both look like cuttings unless I'm completely missing something with the growth rate on this variety.

Overall, a meh listing this year compared to prior years.

Let's call it what it is - those maples were snapped up because (1) they are the lowest priced items available, and (2) they are Ryan Neil/Mirai trees. People can spin it however they want but if one of us put those trees up on a facebook auction site, no one would pay those prices.

As it should be. If Ryan can't command a premium compared to some rando on Facebook, then all of his training, and efforts have been wasted. Bonsai is art. The care and skill provided by a known quantity imparts value on its own.

I appreciate these sales as data points, some quantifiable measure of the state of bonsai in this country, one of many. and the world could always use more pics of nice trees in nice pots.

if I was the monopoly man I'd buy these make these and make their "backs" the front:
Olive no. 1
Engelmann spruce no. 3

I do see signs of significant age on those maples. Specifically, the trunks are gray at the bottom and going up quite some distance. Young sango kaku branches are red and it takes quite a long time for them to develop mature gray bark. It takes long enough that my sango kaku, which I've had for several years now, has yet to develop any gray bark above the graft union. Exactly how long it takes, I'm not sure. I've seen gray bark on some more mature (and much more expensive sango kaku at the nursery, but I don't know how old they were). That said, those maples don't appeal to me, personally, in an aesthetic sense. Just not my cup of tea. But then, I'm into sumo trunks, not slender and delicate.

I’ve always been vocal about my support of Mirai, Ryan, and also every North American Bonsai artist or organization that I’ve had the fortune to work with. So admittedly, I am biased towards my opinion of them(so take my opinion for what it’s worth).

In regards to the trees in this year’s annual sale, the selection feels a lot like other tree sales I’ve seen; some good values, some well executed trees and some misses (on the value or aesthetic mark). I do believe that the target to have a higher number of trees in the annual sale might have affected the execution. However, I was surprised to find some RMJs that were excellent value specimens(one for 4k-ish, another for 3k-ish and another at 6k-ish). As just the inherent value of the tree itself, I believe they were really well priced. And then there were some that I could not justify(price wise), even with the intangible value aspect of it.
The very large cascading RMJ is one that I’ve seen in person and spent some time with. It’s an amazing specimen but I ended up picking up two other trees. I had my eye on Redwood no. 2 but alas wasn’t fast enough to purchase. Ended up with Redwood no.1 and the multi apex RMJ.

RMJ #8 and Colorado blue spruce #2 are my favorites of the lot.
