Thoughts on Today's Bonsai Mirai Tree Sale?

That doug fir looks silly and agree with above comments that it looks like a first styling.

I'll never understand the love for exposed roots, they almost always look awful.

Ha. I usually hate exposed root trees. This one I don’t hate. Once you see the walking tree you can’t unsee it. I think that’s its appeal. Is is $4500 worth of appeal. Not for me but might be for someone else. I thick Lenz would like it a lot. He might even put a dolls head on it

It def reminded me of the lord of the rings scene with the Ents... If that fir talked and threw rocks at Isengard i could see the $4500 tag. :)

This dude sorta gets it

I almost purchased this tree many years ago. But when Ryan asked me if I had a forklift and had to seriously reconsider my life choices!😆 Although to be honest the Yatsubusa elm would be well suited for one!

That said there’s a latch at a nursery near me that I love and only recently learned Ryan had given it the initial styling ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Which larch? There's a huge phoenix grafted one at NEBG that looks amazing, wondering if its that one

It’s at Bonsai West, it’s a smaller cascade, usually they keep it by the entrance to the workshop

I haven’t seen the NEBG one!

Oh, bonsai west is the closer nursery to me, will have to pay closer attention next time! Here's the NEBG one. Maybe not so naturalistic to larches, but still looks great nonetheless imoIMG20250628143209.jpg

Is a subscription to Mirai worth it?
I know that makes me sound cheap... and I guess it's true at the moment..

I want to learn, I'm just not flush with disposable income right now.

You can grab a free trial so you can take a look around. I'd say if you have the time to trawl through the archives on there, it can definitely be worth it.

Absolutely. Wealth of knowledge.

If you only had 10$ to spend for the rest of your life on acquiring bonsai knowledge, without any doubt I'd recommend getting a month of Mirai and just watching the hell out of it for a month.

Ryan isn't particularly concise though, so be prepared to spend some (a lot) of time watching.. It can sometimes feel like a bit of a chore to watch a 2 hour video on a specific topic.

Bjorn (Bonsai U) is a lot more concise (emphasis on a lot), so that could be another option. But Mirai has far more material/videos then BonsaiU, so if you have the time I'd still give the edge to Mirai.
