Got a Facebook post from Mirai about their participation in the Mountain Film Festival in Telluride, Col. The "Trees and Other Entanglements" doc. premiered at the festival and is set for fall release on HBO, or Max.

A quick search on the title and this:

Interesting how media feeds on itself. Appearance in the film is undoubtedly related to that New Yorker article a year ago...He knows how to work it.
He's been at it for far longer than that. This video from 2015 is a big part of why I got into bonsai in the first place.

How looong will it be?

They released a podcast today talking about the premiere and accompanying exhibition. It sounds like the film follows a handful of subjects that have trees as a central part of their lives, Ryan being one of them. Should be interesting at the very least.

I've seen "coming soon" ads in a few places...

Anyone have a concrete release date?

I don't really understand the email that Ryan sent out a week or so ago about a film...It's not a documentary, but apparently a "thriller"???🤔

It's premiering in Portland in Dec.

This is from his email:

HBO Documentary Films and The Treehouse Project present:
“Trees & Other Entanglements”

Join us for a sneak peek as Portland filmmaker Irene Taylor (Hear and Now) shares her latest deeply human thriller. Weaving together several stories of arboreal adoration, "TREES AND OTHER ENTANGLEMENTS" unfolds as a profoundly human tale of our connection to the natural world and one another. In the film, we encounter a young boy who is stolen and hidden among trees, an artist refining American bonsai (Ryan Neil), a photographer artfully observing trees, a mother fighting to protect the forests in her backyard, family trees, uprooted trees, and a man who steadfastly plants them.

The film will be followed by a Q&A with Irene Taylor and other members of the cast and crew.

Date: December 14th, 2023 | Time: 7:00 pm PDT | Venue: Tomorrow Theatre, Portland, OR

An interview with the film maker. Doesn't make any sense to me. Might be explained better by the film itself? Streams on Max in Dec.

I keep waiting to cancel my HBO subscription till this shows up.

I think it’s definitely a thriller in the case of people who love bonsai.

But it’s probably the way the film was made. In the format of a thriller.

Look forward to watching it. Have enjoyed all his content so far. He’s an inspiring person.

Did anybody watch? I really enjoyed it.

I found it interesting how Ryan talked about his return to Japan and being rejected. Also found the discussion about the vandalism and his favorite tree Baker moving. We all have trees in our collection that we have special feelings towards due to time spent or feelings of achievement. They didn’t dive into it but did they find out who was responsible for the vandalism?
