Minnesota winter storage questions...... only mn or colder please reply

So I'm trying to improve my winter storage over last year
I'm using an unheated, unattached, no window garage.... also no electricity
once i put the trees in there, I'm unsure what is the best options
should i store them
-on the ground or up on shelves?
-surrounded by mulch or Styrofoam peanuts
- what about watering? only before they freeze?

thanks
We’re you not successful with your storage last year? Did your plants die?
What improvements are you looking for?

Your getting snippy about Minnesota residents only, but have not replied to Minnesota residents.
ALSO, hard to know how to winter your plants without knowing what you have.

I still new to bonsai but I've had plants forever and I've never given any winter protection. I've had a potted larch for about a decade and the only time it took damage during the winter a moose chomped the top.

I put very little effort into wintering my trees this year. Mulched in and buried with leaves and left out to get buried in snow. I only grow things suitable to my climate and nothing I have is exceptional. It's already below zero f here and I'm not worried.

Even though I kindly asked for MN residence advice right in the heading , some people want to disregard what I was asking for and respond anyways, then get offended when I point out again what I was looking for, probably the same people that throw in their 2 cents all the time, whether their advice was asked for or not. I didnt mean to offend anyone but please follow directions
Duly noted (even though I'm rarely giving advice these days and my advice given to YOU was accurate as related to your situation). Fwiw, I took a minute to read some of your other postings/questions here. You should know that I've experienced many of the same things you're dealing with right now, and I dealt with them quite effectively... 15 years ago. Fear not, though. I may not be very good at following directions but I am good at receiving correction- you can thank the Jesuits for that. Anyway, I will never tread near one of your threads going forward, unless it's too good an opportunity to throw in my 2 cents whether it's ask for or not  .

What's up with all these newbies that they feel the need to direct who is allowed to respond to their threads in any case. If you do not know what to do with your trees in winter, listen to all that chime in, and whether their advice might be worth following. Stop whining. Learning only starts when you are able to listen.

My 2cts, Which you will have a problem with but hey, I am Dutch and I don't care.

Um, err, I kind of get what you're trying to do, BUT, it ain't very smart. You are limiting yourself to growers only in Minnesota and other points in the frozen North. Why aren't you asking CLUBS or bonsai organizations IN Minnesota, instead of asking a question on an international forum? Doesn't make much sense if you want such cramped input.

What you have gotten here from folks who have dealt with extreme cold over the years (even though they may not have a MN Zip code) is great information. Take it or leave it, quit complaining about us "not following directions."

This kind of thing has been increasing in recent years. It also makes me want to quit posting here. It is one of the reasons I took a year off from this site. Offer reasoned advice and you can get objections or "shut up" responses.

I think it reflects a trend in society where "if you have a different view, you are wrong & my enemy" seems to be the default in communication, causes sides to form and arguments to result in fights. Sad to see.

Please stay @rockm! :)
I think someone asking a question and pretending to filter out responses based on keywords instead of reading through honest feedback and absorbing all he can, should be made aware of his wrong attitude and everyone else should just carry on as before.
This is what "common sense" is. It shouldn't be taught here.

There are some who want to filter out the boredom posters who have nothing applicable to say, some who don't want to go through the hassle of explaining every little detail of their situation, and others who are hoping for a fast answer they can trust. All are legitimate reason for a stipulation on who they want answers from, though any such stipulations are inherently impractical.
I think @bonsaiDerek fits all three.

For what it's worth, OP, Colorado can see an enormous variety of growing zones and conditions, some comparable to yours, others not.
In the high country, I've seen people be successful just using pallets to build a semi-open lean-to on the south face of their house, and mulching in their trees and plants under that. A sunny south face of sufficient space may hard to find if you're in town, though, so a garage isn't the worst idea.
I'd spend some time monitoring and moving around a thermometer in their to find the warmest spot. Definitely on the floor, mulched in- or packing peanuts like you said- and if there are windows somewhere where the light will hit and warm them a bit. Rat bait like others have said, and monitor conditions closely.
Good luck.

Or you get ignored. There have been cases where I've spent a fair bit of time writing a response, sometimes even making a virtual or two, and haven't received a "thanks" or any kind of acknowledgement at all that the person even read it. People seem to think they're entitled to a response and owe nothing in return. This is how we wind up with "newbies helping newbies" which at least can be entertaining.

The "quote jumping" phenomenon may account for some of this.
Where the recipient went to the page via a quote below your information and never scrolled back up.
This would be an innocent and likely regrettable mistake.

...........

It's not so much the request for MN or colder to respond that bothers me....

It's the, "do your own research to find out how cold MN is first", to even know of this includes you.

It's kinda like watching CNN for the truth.

.......

I will continue my "better information dump" because I find it amusing to help OTHER people!

Karma Stain!

I’m sorry for offending you.... I thought I was close enough in 5a..

There’s only a FEW people who are actually colder.. and post with any frequency... Canada is only colder STRAIGHT up, (than us)

Sorry friend.

I wish you all the best of luck in life.
