Winter setup for Minnesota

I got one on eBay. Inexpensive Canadian made, but good quality.

Where in Minnesota are you ?

So, what model and brand?
I am located in Brainerd MN, a epicenter of dullness and cultural depravity.

Does anyone else there do bonsai, or are you "it"?

Your winter storage "facility" sounds wonderful...along with the rainwater storage, great set up. Can you come build one for me?

Sigh,I am the only bonsai fiend in my town and surrounding area. But they are not so far and I recently have made a friend in not so far away Duluth Minnesota. Most of my life I have done my bonsai alone, except for the occasional visit from my illustrious friend and mentor: the ogre of New England, Lenz. I have recently joined a Minneapolis study group too, which is a big change for me.

I would love to build for you. I have a few rules though. We would have to pre-planned everything. I would have to be housed and fed (alls I need is a mat and kippers) I would give rough estimate but do the work T&M. You would have to put up with early morning yodeling, yard destruction and personal tree fondling---and no, I am not bringing my skid-steer, we will rent one.

Brainerd is pretty nice, what are you zone 2 ?

I joined the bonsai society due to lack of any bonsai friends, so we will see how it goes.

I will get you the make and model of my RO unit.

I am in zone 3 and live in the country, not near a lake, on a little rise next to a hay field. Springs are what are is bad for me---to variable, hot dry winds one day, freezing the next day. I whine, but it is my home.

Nice offer, but I think the yodeling is a deal breaker! :) Actually, your comment made me laugh because I know someone here who is also into yodeling. Yard destruction has already been taken care of by the installation of a new septic system.

That looks very similar to what I bought as far as design and price. Worth every penny as it also makes the very best water for tea and drinking.

Wow, that looks great. Do the pines receive sufficient winter light?

Sunlight on dormant trees is very much mis-understood. Dormant trees - even pines - do not need light. And it can cause a lot of problems with heat buildup, and trees breaking dormancy because of it.

Nice trees Dave! What temperature range are you maintaing it in?

Thanks but the last pics aren't mine, only the first. I keep my trees between 25 and 35 degrees. They change temps very slowly in my garage, sometimes they are frozen solid for a month, sometimes not. Winter losses are nil.

eBay has some good 100 to 150 gal/day RO filters for just over $100 or so.

WHAT!! I've never heard of a 100 gallon RO system holy cow my RO system takes 2 hours to make a gallon..

Hello Davetree, and Crust I am ventring into bonsai I started this fall in erly october with willow cuttings and a few dormant trees I dug up and have been wondering if there is a way to winter over zone 5 trees. I am situated in Bemidji MN, on the cold end of zone3 both brainard and minneapolis are the deep south to me.

I was wondering about an idea with outside air, it's an engineering project but doable. I was thinking of a thermostat controlled air circulation system using outside air to cool and set it within a rang of 20-38 degrees so the fan kick on is random. Also with a shut off dam for each the exhaust and intake and make like a giant frozen food isle type freezer out of it as it rarely gets above 32 from november- mid febuaray this year we had a warm october. Seeing as I have given some trees a dormant timei n a fridge I think this idea would work, I think you may even be able to grow a pine tree in it inside, jsut htink of it fall colours after the snow has hit the ground (if you bring your trees inside and mess with lights and such till you feel it's time to freeze them) and spring growth a couple months erly. I'm starting to ramble.. I am curious to see opinions on my idea and discuss viability.

I would cover the windows to keep out the natural light. I'd also try my best to keep the temp about 28-30 degrees consistently. If you keep out the light and keep the trees cold you won't be bothered by them emerging from dormancy early.

emerging from dormancy early.

Which can be the worst problem with doing an enclosure for overwintering. But if you can do it right, it's the best possible solution, if you want to keep anything that is marginal in your area.
