Mateo’s back yard dumbassery

I got out and played in the forest today. Cut back quite a few Osage trees, rotated some hornbeam stumps and cut back my discount rack Acer palmatum

Some nice stumps @Cajunrider may want to see, one has his name on it 😁

I got out today and did some more snippy snipping on some material. First one is my instant flat top BC. I went through it and removed shoots from unwanted places and wired a few horizontal.

Next up was my American elm. It has been putting out some vigorous growth so I trimmed it back a little bit to try to stimulate more back budding.

Then I moved on to a couple hornbeams. Thinned out some whirls and removed a few basal shoots.

I got out in the nursery today to check on some cypresses. The ones @Cajunrider sent are doing great! Im kinda chomping at the bit to do some carving on the big one, with it being half dead the possibilities are endless for carving. I’m going to be a good boy and wait until all the new growth has hardened off.

You can see the dead areas on the top.

The other one is growing like a weed this year
IMG_2818.jpeg
And the growth around the chop is starting to roll over.
IMG_2819.jpeg
And you can see the bronzing happening on some of the foliage on in the BC forest.

And last but least, here’s the one @BrightsideB made me a pot for. It’s loving life as well

Nice video.

Looking at your bald cypresses, I think some shade cloth for the hot part of the summer could REALLY improve your growth. They are rather bronze, which will stop the growth. People here in Seattle keep theirs under 30-40% shade if they're unobstructed, or afternoon full shade. This would also help out other deciduous trees, most likely, like one or two of the hornbeams.

Black pines are looking nice! Was the neagari one from Curtis as well?

My trees only really get sun from about 11-5, I may try moving them to a shadier spot next year. The neagari one was given to me by @Piedmont Bonsai. Along with the corallinum JM, the Katsura JM and the nishiki gawa JM. You are right though, I could get better growth if I had certain things in better positions. I am planning on redoing the second half of my area next spring and organizing my trees to better take advantage of the natural shaded areas. I’m also thinking about making a big grow bed so I can get some things in the ground. Once all the chestnut trees are gone I’ll have room to spread out a bit.

Good to see an update of your inventory. A few familiars in there.
Hope to see you soon.

I also went to a local park where they have a short leaf variety of BC and took some cuttings. This will be my second year trying to root this sucker.

And now they will live under my bench until they either root or die, whichever comes first.

I've had good luck rooting bc and dawn redwood cultivars, I have maybe 4 different parent plants of each. Really like the density on Peve Marinet. Took this while doing some landscaping so ignore the awful photo. I can try and root you some cuttings if you'd like.

I love the peve minaret! I’ve tried for two years now to root some with no luck. By all means, please. Maybe you will have better luck than I have had. BTW, that’s a really nice one!
