M. Frary's 6 year scots pine contest thread.

I am from the contest future. We are now going into year 4 growth from seed. MVIMG_20190511_163018.jpg

But in all seriousness here is my only survivors from last year's seed crop. MVIMG_20190511_163038.jpgMVIMG_20190511_163527.jpgi still have to pot up these other two. Here I have the roots spread out and barely under the surface on top of a flat Rock with tap root removed Hence the spagnum and pea stone holding shit down. Hoping for a nice flat root spread.

Looking good! Mine are way behind, just barely showing off their first adult foliage.

The decapitated ones show some serious stunted growth. But the pic isn't loading unfortunately.

An update.
Not quite a year out.
I put them in these cups in pure D.E. for a couple years then most if not all will go into colanders.
I ended up with 48.
None of these got ate because they were encased in ice. Literally.
All survived that and it's been a week since putting them in cups and all of the buds are opening up.
I barerooted them and cut the tap roots off.
Tough little buggers.

Just the tap root? How do Scots react towards the jbp seedling stem cutting technique?

Also, how goes fighting the varmints this winter? Whistle pigs decimated my crab apple cuttings I spent so much time nurturing. I'm planning a first run off pines from seed soon, but am already thinking of how I need to fight the varmints.

Yeah, you can do it. They are slower to kick on afterwards (than JBP) but they do get there eventually and I got decent roots from them. I did it again this year on some more seedlings and they also seem to have survived the process fine... I haven't checked the roots on them, gotta wait another few months (it's summer here). Here's what the ones I did last year looked like when I potted them up in preparation for summer.

Just the tap root.
Don't know about how they would take to the cutting method.
The V.C. have been quiet this winter.
They come out when its real cold.

from what I understand most of the Pine species adapt to this method quite well.

Well.
They aren't doing so well.
No.
Not well at all.
I got hit by voles and they are gone.

I'll get back into the swing of things here.
Just a little setback.
And thank you so much.
