I’m not sure what zone @Lorax7 is in though. If he is nearer the lake or south of me, might be a different story!!YIKES! To cold for me AND shore pines!
Just because LATELY temps somewhat less Arctic does not mean permanently absent. Personally have seen 13 below zero here and ice 6" thick. WAY below USDA weather zone.
If it was a larger or more expensive tree, perhaps I’d make more of an effort. But, it’s small enough that I can easily bury the whole thing under snow and it’s a $7 tree, so I’m ok with taking my chances for now. Snow does a decent job as an insulator. Once buried under snow, it should stay reliably around 32 F, maybe a little lower during the coldest part of winter.
An established tree in the ground has much more protection against the elements then the same tree in a pot on the ground.
Agreed, I’ve stuck to the 1-zone approach so far and have yet to lose one. Fingers crossed for this winter
The pots are packed together like a jigsaw puzzle and mulched in with several bags of cypress mulch and my back yard has a fair amount of protection anyway. House on the east, huge old growth cottonwood, a mature spruce, and forsythia bushes on the west. Garage and a row of trees to the south. North side of the yard is the only open part.Three things I’d say for cheap insurance since these trees seem to all be on the ground.
- Garbage bags
- Stakes or branches
- Bag of medium bark nuggets
Total cost less then ten 10 bucks.
