I’ve had this little spruce for a couple of years. I think it’s a dwarf Alberta spruce, but I’d have to find the tag (if I still have it) to be sure. It had a rough time and lost some branches when it was first planted in this very shallow pot a year or two ago, but appears to be on the mend now.

looks like a pot for a forest design
It would have to be a very small forest to fit in that pot. Are mame forest plantings a thing? I don’t recall ever having seen one at a show.

shit, i don't know. you really think that weird ass shape is for a single tree?
It’s a little difficult to tell looking at it from the side, but when you look at it from above it’s easy to see that the pot is in the shape of China. I didn’t think much beyond that when I planted the spruce in it.

lol. i wonder how many people have a ficus in a florida shaped pot

I would say don't touch it - something was done to it to make it almost die so I would just let it recover for a couple year if you plan on saving it.

Oh, I haven’t touched it except to cut off dead branches and I don’t plan to do any work on it again until it’s growing vigorously. I worked the roots pretty aggressively in order to get it into the very shallow pot it’s in now. That’s why it had a rough time. I kind of like where it’s headed now though. Seems like the struggle gave it some interesting character.

Might consider some tariffs on that pot

Seems a bit late for that. That pot was imported from Yixing in 2021. Also, unlike semiconductors and rare earth metals, I can’t think of any national security implications for failure to protect domestic bonsai pot production that would merit imposing a tariff. 80s New Wave band, Devo, famously wore red flower pots as hats, but I’m unaware of any instances of the U.S. military forces adopting bonsai pots as armor or weaponry.
