Lorax7 Japanese Maple ‘Orange Dream’ #1 progression

I bet that if you visited an artist in their studio, you’d stand behind them while they’re painting and, despite having no idea what they’re trying to paint, you’d criticize each brushstroke and tell them they’re doing it wrong. Then, after you’d been asked to leave, you’d continue to hang around and make up lame excuses for your behavior instead of just leaving.

What does that have to do with an online public forum for bonsai growing advice?

It’s explaining by analogy exactly what took place here. This stupid conversation should have ended when I stated that the unsolicited advice was unwelcome.

That's not how analogies work. You can't explain exactly what happened by analogy. Notwithstanding, your analogy is ill fitted. If you want to draw an analogy between a website and meatspace, you need to look to the purpose and function of the website. This is a forum. It's public. You need to choose a similar public situation, not a private studio. Because of that incongruity, the analogy falls flat. You're correct that it would be totally inappropriate to visit a painter at work and criticize an unfinished painting. However, it would be more analogous to compare this website to a club workshop, where you bring your trees for advice from other club members. Bring a tree; expect suggestions.

In any case, I'm here to give and receive advice. I'm happy to carry on this conversation. If you want the conversation to end, you could just stop commenting.

Go fuck yourself

You’re giving styling suggestions for a sacrifice branch. That’s why this “advice” is so fucking stupid.

I agree with you that it wasn't useful advice. That's not the point. The point is that this is a public forum, and it's not rude for people to offer you suggestions. You can take it or leave it.

It is rude to offer unsolicited criticism, particularly in a progression thread, without making any attempt to first understand what the artist is trying to achieve. It’s also rude to offer unsolicited advice that’s appropriate for a beginner but not appropriate for a more experienced person when the site makes it so easy to tell if someone is a beginner or not (date you joined is in your profile and the titles under people’s handles also give an indication of how long they’ve been around). Do you seriously think there’s anyone doing bonsai who’s had a maple for more than a couple years who doesn’t know how cuts die back to the next node?

Congratulations. You and the guy you’re defending have now filled this progression thread with a full page of irrelevant garbage that has nothing whatsoever to do with the development of this tree and you’ve kept at it long after you were asked to stop. Actually, he seems to have quit posting, so it’s just you carrying the torch now. Do you think anyone who comes upon this progression thread in the future will want to wade through all of your crap just to get to the next photo of the tree? Do you think you’ve added any value whatsoever to the site by continuing this? That’s a question to ponder. I don’t actually want you to answer it here.
