Last tree of the year, 2019 edition

I guess that will work if you are in the hunt for peoples choice awards.
Of course, if you don't care one way or the other whether or not anybody thinks your bonsai are better than run-of-the-mill, leave the tutu at home.

Well, when I started this thread, I certainly intended it to be my last tree of the year. But, sometimes shit happens.....I have been searching for the right tree for my purple @sorce pot and ebay has tempted me with two candidates. A tiny 3" dwarf Barbados cherry and a 4" purple bougie, which is on it's way. The last purchase might be a big mistake, lows Monday are in the teens, but it hasn't shipped yet and temps will be rising later in the week. When I saw the little purple bougie, I could see it in this pot, and bid on it against my better judgement , not really expecting to win the auction. Will post a picture, when it arrives. This WILL be my last tree of the year!😇
Can't wait to see it in bloom in that pot. 🥰

In 2018...I totally intended on refined material to add. In 2019, I joined a begginers group to offer advice. In sharing progression photos I realized I really enjoy that stage. Added several projects to my bench. Called it done with my mental head count. Got suckered into adding one exposed root Catlin Elm from Jason Schley (my last one for the year) when the news did a video piece of his nursery and the tree caught my eye. Screenshot that footage and inquired about it. Kicking myself...was not wanting to go over my head count. Yet made the purchase.

Out of guilt...of the purchase I shipped one of my Goji Berry projects to a friend. (I had two)There... technically I'm back to where I started.

Then...Matt Smith posted walk through videos. I've always admired turtleback clumps...and dang gone it I asked about one. He abliged and tagged me in one. I had said no more... but I did send one away...right? My husband keeps saying he feels I have more room in that greenhouse than I let on. So...moved things around in preparation for this to arrive. 🤦 I think I'm around 27 from my 25 head count desired number. Including that one in the ground.

Now what are you worrying about?

How many do you have in that mix!?! 😲

Making sure I still have good air flow in the cold greenhouse while we see winter. I could squeeze more in...but I want to keep good air flow. Plus I don't want repots to ever seem like a chore needing done.

@TyroTinker right!?! It's so easy to allow it to thicken in the ground. I'm pretty happy where it is structure wise.

I'm going down to NC to spend x-mas with the in-laws and plan to make a detour by Nature's way nursery on the way back. There's a good chance my last tree of the year will be on the last week of the year.
A week before heading down to Nature's way, @William N. Valavanis put a Acer Palmatum up for sale I couldn't pass up. Pretty sure this will be my last tree of the year!

Will be making a topic for it come spring.

I went to maple ridge nursery last week and picked up a couple of 7 gal trees to layer and play with next year. This one wasn't labeled, either arakawa or nishik igawa, one and the same? Who knows. Anyway I'm pretty excited about it. Planning a ground layer first in the spring to get the nebari started...View attachment 270621View attachment 270622
Cant complain about the beer either 👍

a Acer Palmatum
Is the second picture your future front? Looks like a nice maturing specimen!

soo.. ok.. Ahum..
Had a workshop the other day. THe guy doing the workshop brought a van full of trees. Could not ignore the fact that I did not have an oriental hornbeam. So..

It is nice and twiggy and fairly large (2 1/2 ft tall). But there are numerous problems with the tree that I will have to deal with, without throwing away what is nice..

Development plan: Trimmed back a lot of long taperless branches; removing about half of the ramification getting light in and hopefully bring some more budding on the inside so i can develop movement and taper.. In the top I will do a cleanup of old unhealed cuts in spring. I already selected new leaders, and will let the current tops extend to get some closing of the cuts. Depending on how fast that goes, a front will be selected.

To be honest, I'm still undecided on a side. The top has way better branch placement and trunck movment but will require work in the apex. While, the bottom one has a better truck line and apex for a bigger tree but the branchs will be needing the work.

That looks like it's going to be a fun hornbeam! So many options!

Those of you familiar with Brent and evergreengardenworks.com might recognize this tree from the specimens page. I’m looking forward to working on it soon. Inspired by @Brian Van Fleet and his work with junipers from Brent.

As always, just excellent service from Brent. I so enjoy working with him.
