Last tree of the year, 2019 edition

Hokotusei satsuki, imported, came in to my possession a couple weeks ago. Let’s just say it’s the last one this year I’ll admit to. It came from North American Satsuki Bonsai Center, which used to be the old El Dorado Bonsai. New owner is a really nice guy.

I was soooo close to buying that when I first saw it!

I’m glad you blinked. 😎 It looks even better in real life. Great base and nebari too.
Lol..I’m glad you got it..my track record with them isn’t the best. I’m sure it’ll do better in your care!

The tree is about 8” tall, and the trunk is 1.25” above the flair. A lot of the primary branching is already on its way to being pretty well established. This is my first really nice azalea, and I love it.
Normally our Milwaukee Bonsai Society annual exhibition is in September, but in 2020 it’s being held the last weekend in June in conjunction with the MABA convention. Hokotusei is a later-blooming cultivar, so it might just be in bloom at that time. I have a killer blue round pot for it, too.

So mine arrived and I got to say I'm quite happy, those pictures on the website do not do this beast justice.
It's been grown out really well, plenty of options to choose going forward and even some opportunity for some carving which I'll need to get my head around but to say I'm stoked is an understatement.

The pot will have to go but going by the amount of roots coming out of the drainage holes then it'll need a repot anyway, I may have a nice pot of suitable size on hand although I underestimated the size of this thing so maybe not plus I'm not sure if it is suitable style either. The pot it's in is nearly 30cm wide and possibly a touch too deep.
That just means some pot shopping to do, got a couple of ideas for it at least.

Cool. Would have guessed that it was much taller. The actual dimensions make it even better lol. Nothing cooler than a nice shohin Satsuki when flowering imo.

Well I went to the Monastery for soil and ended up with a Brazilian Rain Tree. I have been wanting one for a while but I have been trying to decrease the amount of trees I have to bring in for winter. So I got a little one! ;)

I actually did get one more premna from Jason Schley.
I did some trimming on it already.
The one I got from PR did not survive an attach of some kind but his has done well for me. They do not mind being under my lights at all.

We were at the Schley nursery this past summer. Out in the middle of nowhere, but once we found it, it was worth the trip.

I would spend my whole paycheck if I went there in person. 😂
Luckily, we were flying, so I was only able to buy one small tree. You should have seen my husbands face when he expressed amazement that a tree cost $320 and I had to tell him it was actually $3200! Priceless. I posted a bunch of pictures from my visit in the outings and exhibitions forum, if you want to see.

Oops, sorry @amcoffeegirl , I see now you saw that thread from my visit.

$3200? Please show us!
I took a slew of pictures. I don't remember specifically which one it was, but there were some pretty large specimen trees there.

I had forgotten about these burning bush I picked up! I’ve got one other dwarf burning bush that struggled this year and is not far in development due to there limited pushes of growth. But I still love there character. I bought 2 “coles compact” dwarf burning bush. Wonderfully small leaves. 1 is quite small and will be shohinish size. The other is a multi trunk clump that I know is hiding some great surface roots and I love the branch and trunk structure already in place. I couldn’t resist!

Is that Irish Moss under that Aussie Beer?
🤪

I'm happy you're finding these!

Sorce

Yeah it is or was, on both counts.
Took an evening to get as much as possible out but I'll keep at it as I find it. Also have vinegar doing it's thing on the trunk/scars to get that moss out as I want to at least clean that up and seal it until I think of a better idea.

Totally happy, I have to count on the idea that where there is one there should be more. Going to keep a closer eye on that place.
