He didn't use pipe bombs, though. He used what seems to be a fully automatic rifle!

To do mass killing with guns:
(1) acquire guns (legal)
(2) acquire ammo (legal)
(3) start shooting
To do mass killing with pipe bombs (or other improvised explosives)
(1) do research to figure out how to build weapon
(2) acquire all items needed (legal)
(3) build bombs without blowing yourself up
(4) set off bombs without blowing yourself up (hope you built bombs properly)

Seems a lot easier to do it with guns. How far can you throw a pipe bomb? How far can a rifle bullet travel?

But what good does is do to talk about what he could have done? In the last couple decades all the shootings could have been executed with other weapons, but they weren't.

contrary to what you might think - full autos are NOT easy to get legally. they require very long wait time, federal approval and LOTS of money. (wayyyy more than their semi-auto counterparts.) attempts to bypass that=federal time. the nfa regulates a series of different firearm "types"

but i think we're missing the point here. this guy was only slightly more lethal with full auto. anyone with even a little training could do what he did with a semi auto version. it does not take that much longer to fire in semi auto, and it does not take long to reload (not much longer than reaching down and picking up another loaded gun which he already had several of)

i mean he was evil but the guy was smart -he picked the perfect target and firing position. every one was tightly packed in together, he had the high ground, he was concealed well making it hard to intercept, he was well away from anyone who would provide resistance giving plenty of time to reload or even change viewpoints - with that planning there was practically no way to avoid that many casualties.

I get your point, but guns were used because they were easier to obtain and required no learning curve.

If the guns weren't available, with the right knowledge, other means are.

Which is one of the reasons why I'm not sure we can ever stop this from happening if the killer is motivated enough.

I'm framing this discussion with perspective.
Because the legality of anything is not the problem.
That goes right back to the first thing I said to you today.....where does it stop?
Ban everything except the chains on our ankles .....they'd find a way to kill with the shackles.

But why do you say you will be in chains?! No one is locking you up. As @Dav4 already mentioned there is no removing guns from law abiding citizens. I just don't get why people don't want to admit that legal or illegal, the US is full of guns. So gun violence will continue as we sit and talk about all the other ways someone might commit mass murder. @Paradox I am on the same page as you.;)

OK, my point is that if we allow the govt to ban guns, it will not end there....
Should we ban everything that one can use as a weapon?
Forks and knives?
Chop sticks?
Maybe we should just amputate everyone's hands at birth....

Ok, I don't think anywhere in this thread anyone is saying ban all guns, so no need for such exaggeration. Most of us live where hunting is a part of our culture.

We have a knee-jerk reaction to this because we've been in a protracted battle for the better part of a century now to prevent a complete Marxist takeover of the nation. They got thiiiiiis close (fingers very close together) when Obama was in office. The plan was to have Hillary finish the job. The only thing keeping the U.S. marginally free is that the honest, law-abiding citizenry are armed to the teeth. Once we are disarmed, we'll follow the pattern of the Soviet Union, Communist China, Cambodia, Cuba, and Nazi (National Socialist) Germany. In each case following disarming of the populace, mass-extermination followed. The body count is upwards of 100 million in the 20th Century. It's what they do. Marxists are murderers and destroyers. Some dress nice and have winning smiles.
