This tree just inspires conversation and thought. I really like this hawthorn maybe my favorite I've seen. I'm glad u left he rock n root, I like it there, adds to the wild look.

Thanks for the replies again. 
Another little update... I have recently done a little burning of the carved areas with a blowtorch to remove tool marks, and add some depth to the hollows.

I'm not sure if I agree or not. It's definitely one of those trees that really pops when naked!

What a fantastic tree. Anyone would be luck to have it! I think I agree with the above sentiment. It could be the density of new growth but the top section, when in leaf, looks too tall and probably too straight. I think a slight reduction in height on the center apex branch would allow the finished product down the road to end more gradually and thus have a more refined canopy.

Did you just do a trim on it recently? I only ask because it doesn't look like it's throwing much growth if not. Love this treee...

Hi Judy. Yes, its just had its third pruning of this season - also the apex has been reduced, and the big root around the rock has been carved.
Here it was before pruning a few days ago... Its grown extensions this long three times this year, so growing well and starting to build a bit of ramification now.

Hi Lee, thanks for the additional pic. I wonder if you would be further ahead with your branch building process if you would allow it to thicken your chosen secondaries for longer instead of doing so many cuttings in one season?

Thanks Judy. I am led to believe that hawthorns are a little different from other deciduous trees insomuch as they must be pruned as soon as the shoots begin to lignify and before they turn woody. I have used this video as a guide (skip to 7 minutes):

Unfortunately I don't have one of this tree, but here is another tree we collected the same day... This one was later sold.
