I'm so sorry. I feel your pain. Several decades back I transplanted a 50-old camellia that was a beast to move. It was going to be razed when an old nursery was in the path of development, and though I managed to keep it alive for a year with pampering, it still died. It's tough when you put that much blood, sweat, and tears into something, even though you know it may be a long shot - and then it dies.
