Large collected Elm

I like where its heading! Have you thought about bringing the twin trunk split to base level with a ground layer?

seems pretty easy on elms https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/ground-layering-a-chinese-elm.48858/#post-1034066
Actually. I did do a ring at the base last year, but decided to keep the existing surface roots that were on the bottom left. I was able to get her a few roots going on the bottom right, but they are just small and tender. I potted the tree a bit lower to get them thicker. So the thought is to eventually have more of a spread out base. I really like the current unorthodox looking slant and base and I really think I can improve it as is. We shall see!

These trees are so darn vigorous. Decided maybe 8 or so days ago to trim and defoliate. It is now exploding with growth. Reallllly, needs a repot angle change. I’m hoping the roots on that lower right side will be developing properly like I am planning.

Hey all. New thread time. I conveniently left the type of elm off the title because these get a bad wrap. In some cases rightfully so, but I’m finding them more and more enjoyable as they thrive in my climate and are everywhere. I have also had great success in not losing branches randomly as there reputation holds.

I collected this tree in mid April after scouting its location last year.
I went real hard at collection, flat cut the bottom and removed bark to encourage roots where I wanted them. A pseudo ground layer if you will.
the first pic is early may about 2-3 weeks after collection.
I’ve been very aggressive since then. I can almost guarantee the pot is close to full of roots. Other than the top 10 % below surface.

June 25 - 2022 you all may think I’m crazy, but I decided to completely defoliate, run a thread graft, trim as desired and wire the entire tree.

I got a bunch of Siberian elms too. You know I see the in the streets used as bushes the really reaping well to pruning. There was one growing in my fiends walkway for almost a decade. They obviously step on it and it’s good. Enjoy. I like zelkova for their small leaves

I really like this. We have a bunch of these growing here in NE South Dakota as well. Can't keep them out of flower gardens, flower pots, gutters, etc 🤪

Really nice work Danny. It has so much promise. If you don't I'd like to make one quick comment. I would bring one of the two branches up top down and treat it more as a side branch. At the moment I cannot help to see a horned cyclops staring at me!
