Larch grove after 45 yrs

Vance, given that you are growing these in zone 9 in California I was wondering whether you get more than one flush of growth per year? On mine here in zone 7a I typically see just 2 flushes, one in spring and another in mid-late summer. Nigel up in Canada says he gets 3-4 per year and with my Japanese larch I am about to prune back my second flush.

Thank you Mike, I'll wait till leaf drop in the fall and do some careful pruning.

Tallest is over 48" [120cm} Girth at top of nebari +2.5" [6cm] Collected at the Mitten (penninsula), Gaylord MI. You've got the same opportunity across the lake along the Niagara Escarpment! All's well with the grove and she gets about 3-4hrs sun in the AM hours and balance in shade....Again, thanks to Eckhoffw! Thanks Cuz

Sorry WNC Bonsai, I missed your comment regarding the growth pattern per year. When collected in the Mitten they did a full two. Here in CA USDA Zone 9 The pop out around early March and then a second flush around late May.

Here's a photo of the grove as of August '25 Thanks to Eckhoffw all are doing very well! I will probably work on the snag by doing some shaving and Lime sulphur.

Looks wonderful Vance!

Just curios. Is this tree dead? IMG_4484.jpeg
If so, is it one of the ones I sent you?
I mean, it looks good either way. Just wondering.
I can always send you more if needed.😉

Hi Eckhoffw!

That tree has been gone for about a decade. Your two babies are fully taken in my the gang and are doing very well! Again I thank you for them!
The grove now has stabilized and I am pleased with the results. I do keep it well watered here in The north central valley of CA as it gets pretty hot and the air is dry!

Just curious, are any of those trees 45 years old or are they like my 50 year old belt that has had 3 new buckles and 4 leather straps in that time but the belt itself is 50😀

The two that Eckhoffw so kindly gave are probably 2~3 yrs old. The other three were collected and planted in 1980

What, if anything have you done to preserve the trunk over that time?

How has the dead trunk impacted repots over that time frame? (i.e. Do you take additional precautions not to disturb it? Did you originally work to remove the dead roots? Etc.)

I have left it in place. As time has passed I have scraped the bark off as much as possible and for the first time applied lime sulphur to preserve it.Around 1985 As the grove got larger I purchased a long narrow fiberglass rock pot which held it for a decade. In around 2000 it was apparent it needed a larger container. My friend, Paul Baresi and I made large hand made cement rock which was it was repotted. It’s has been grown onto such and is one massive block of root. (I will search through some photographs and find the first “tray” it was planted into.)
