Japanese White Pine Seed Germination Technique

Open the bag
Carefully remove the one germinated seed and pot it.
Continue with your stratification routine.
did that .... thanks :)
I will keep a close eye on the warm and cold stratification now onwards and look every 7 days... in case some more pop up

If a seed sprouts in cold stratification, don't panic, the cold usually keeps them "fresh" without rotting for a month or two. So you don't have to pull out seedlings that sprout in the refrigerator. You can hold them until safe to plant out in spring. ***usually, do check regularly. If any show signs of rotting, pull all the sprouted ones out and pot up.

Seed don't read the books. If you plant 100 seeds of a species, in all likely hood, the majority, maybe 80 to 99% will follow the "rules". But it is not uncommon for one or two to sprout right away without any stratification, and it is not unusual for some, maybe 1 to 5 % to sit out an extra year, and just sprout a year later than planned. There is always some variation. but on the average, most of the time, most of the seed will follow the standard species specific program for germination.

Maple seed, whether or not it needs a warm stratification depends on how dry the seed got. I forget the exact number, but if the seed drops to less than some magic number, I vaguely remember 70% moisture, or lower, then the seed will require 60 to 90 days of warm stratification, followed by cold stratification to germinate. But fresh maple seed, with higher than 70% moisture, will germinate with only cold stratification, or sometimes a % will germinate with zero stratification. So how seed is handled after harvesting is crucial to germination success.

Good luck

In much literature on germination percentages of fresh tree seeds, a germination percentage of 40% in the laboratory is indicated for JWP. it is ridiculous to assume that we hobbyists could achieve a higher success rate.
Growing JWP from seed is fun, but not easy. I have ordered a pound, but this was not yet available. For me there is still too little time for the whole process: Soaking in hot water; 3 months of warm stratification and 3 months of cold stratification. I hope to be able to start with fresh seed this year in October or November.

I still blame myself for not beiing carefull enough after 2013. I wanted to develop these young seedlings to fast and did to much in a short time.
But it is very well possible to grow JWP from seed!

So you did a total of 6 months stratification? 3 warm & 3 cold.

I only ask because the end of a 3 month stratification is about to be completed for my JWP seeds.

May I ask what medium you sowed your seeds in?

I can't remember. I don't think I stratified for 6 months. It's what I planned to do if I could get fresh seeds. The white pine is no longer in my garden. The seeds in 2010 were fresh as could be! I think that is most important!
I think I sowed the seeds in APL, but can't really remember.
