I’ve considered doing something similar to what you proposed, putting each root mass into pieces of a large yamaaki that broke during the snow storm catastrophe I experienced back in Georgia. I never did it, because I was concerned about the edges of the root mass that was not up against the pot wall drying out, and the idea of moving the tree, which is very wide, with two separate pots convinced me not to do it.

It's actually been in two shows this year. The first was back in early May, at the Michigan All State show at Meijer Gardens... unfortunately placed in the same row as a bunch of iconic maples from the Rochester, NY area
so got pretty much zero attention there. The second showing, pictured above, was at The Detroit Zoo this summer with my club. That one was fun.

It’s a visual reminder that I need to think twice before pinching or pruning during the growing season. Here, it’s definitely to prevent me from pinching the growing tips prematurely, as I want the areas tagged with blue tape to grow and gain some strength.
Yeah, it's an act of desperation, really. When I'm pinching... and particularly, with a larger tree... I tend to slip into semi trance and have accidentally pinched branches I had intended to let grow, and once pinched, that branch's growth is done for the year
. So far so good this year, so it must be working
