Japanese maple raft project

I'm positive this isn't an original-to-me idea, but I'd donate to the cause to get matching pots to put each of these sets of roots in their own pot. That might be too gimmicky though. I really like this tree. You're doing well by it.

I’ve considered doing something similar to what you proposed, putting each root mass into pieces of a large yamaaki that broke during the snow storm catastrophe I experienced back in Georgia. I never did it, because I was concerned about the edges of the root mass that was not up against the pot wall drying out, and the idea of moving the tree, which is very wide, with two separate pots convinced me not to do it.

Made my day seeing this updated. Also glad others got to visually enjoy this tree. As it looks to have been in a show. Well done you!
It's actually been in two shows this year. The first was back in early May, at the Michigan All State show at Meijer Gardens... unfortunately placed in the same row as a bunch of iconic maples from the Rochester, NY area 🤷‍♂️ so got pretty much zero attention there. The second showing, pictured above, was at The Detroit Zoo this summer with my club. That one was fun.IMG_9086.jpg

What a shame it was placed as such. Rafts for deciduous are rarer than rocking horse sh*t if you ask me.

Love this tree...truly as I respect it as the raft deciduous it is.

What's the function of the blue tape?
It’s a visual reminder that I need to think twice before pinching or pruning during the growing season. Here, it’s definitely to prevent me from pinching the growing tips prematurely, as I want the areas tagged with blue tape to grow and gain some strength.

A fingers kiss right there.

The blue tape...pure genius!
Yeah, it's an act of desperation, really. When I'm pinching... and particularly, with a larger tree... I tend to slip into semi trance and have accidentally pinched branches I had intended to let grow, and once pinched, that branch's growth is done for the year :(. So far so good this year, so it must be working:D.

I was watching a raft creation video other day and searched here for raft and found this thread. One of the coolest projects I have seen on here. Added it to my watch list. Looks awesome!

It was so cool to see this tree in person at last year's ABS/Michigan all-state show - amazing.

Several seasoned folks in our WM Bonsai Club mentioned the tree and how it was deserving of more attention. Passers-by might miss that this is a raft when it's in full leaf!

Spring is here...
