Japanese maple raft project

Some photos covering the fall foliage development over a few weeks. The last photo with the best color from this morning… I started filling it out a day or so ago.View attachment 461013View attachment 461014View attachment 461015View attachment 461016View attachment 461017
Awesome idea and really really great execution... will be watching this one going forward.

One thing that I learnt is that even for the raft that is already located on very thick trunk in order to thicken the grafts' trunks you put this tree into the grow box...

Getting really old n gnarly now, so cool.
Yeah, it is . The bark on the older trunks is just beginning to mature. It's a long time coming, but when that grey bark reaches into the upper canopy, it'll be so worth the wait.

Wonderful tree. It reminds me of the awesome Peter Adams drawings. Have you ever tried weak lime sulfur to whiten Japanese maples?

I've thought about it but have never actually done it. Maybe I'll give it a whirl if a can carve out some free time this weekend.

I’m not sure I’m going to repot this one the spring. I’ve got a much shorter growing season up here in Michigan and I’m thinking going every other year for more developed deciduous trees is fine… We’ll see. I did start a couple of root grafts with my itty-bitty, teeny, weenie maple seedling stock on the right side to improve the ramification there a bit .

You have that looking mighty good there Dav4! Good Job.

Looking so cohesive, wow!

I’m two stepping to take advantage of all this rain but man is the ground saturated!

Man..This is so cool...You make me wanna turn every single one of my ugly trees sideway now lol. Thanks for the inspiration.

Love seeing this progression thread and the dead wood really makes this tree awesome to me.

Looking fantastic Dave! All state show next year?
Maybe? All my teeny tiny root grafts failed this spring, and I need to let another leader run a little bit to soften the abrupt chop I just performed…We’ll see :)
