Japanese maple raft project

Will look forward to a spring update on this one.
Same. This is a really special tree. Raft is a seldom seen style, but this tree is a spectacular example. What a great example of making lemonade from a lemon! This raft has such amazing potential to become a show stopper. The trunks still need to come into proportion with the base along with filling out the canopies/ramification, but Dave doesn't seem too afraid to put it back into a grow box in order to accomplish this. So inspiring!

This one was pulled out from underneath the deck this past weekend. We’re entering the ramification stage for the existing trunks and branches, but we still need more trunks :-). You can see from the photo of the back that the only thing I have remaining from last year‘s graft attempts, except for one that took, are scars. I’ve got whips wired around that will be thread grafted in a week or so… Supposed to fall back into the mid 20s so I’m holding off for now. Will likely get a couple of root grafts this spring, too.

This is some kind of great to me too!

The things that go under the tree, that's what is so interesting.
The things going on, on the other side.

I hope the "go under" stays, and maybe even got emphasized at repot?

Got Future?

You thinking what I'm thinking. (2 Pots one tree!!!)

Everything is popping in my backyard. All the thread and root grafts on this one are beginning to grow :). I started pinching back the new growth on this one for the first time ever in its development today. It’s going to be a busy few days as the rest of the buds open up… And we’re supposed to get rain through the week😬

Cool tree. This is only one of a handful of threads I'm watching. It's great to look back and see its journey and the work that's gone into moving it forward.

Pinching is for the birds! I checked on this one at least once every day for two weeks straight and I still missed at least 15 buds that extended. It does have one or two sacrifice branches running free, and I didn’t pinch back any of the root or thread grafts. This thing is a giant bush right now. All the graphs are alive and growing. I’ll be sending out the canopy a bit shortly.

This one got moved back into a pot today. Clearly digging the Akadama!

The new grafts are strong enough to get wired…

It still needs some clean up that should have been done last fall, but I can get to that in a bit.

That looks amazing! Good fit with the pot shape and size too. All the grafts look strong.👏
