Restyling this larch for a friend it’s been stuck in that tiny pot for 3/4 years so wasn’t doing much growing.

Repotted into a basket out of the old soil into an inorganic mix, looking to try and get some roots growing to make the nebari a bit less 2D hopefully with time it will grow some and they’ll fuse together and be part of the lower trunk.

Will be pruning back to the first branch once I’ve strengthened it. It may have to be slow removal of the rest of the trunk line as I’d rather play it safe as it’s not my tree.

Does anyone have any advice or pruning back larch harshly as in best time for it or anything to watch out for?

Nice job. I would wire your new leader and let it run, thicken up a bit. I would let your new leader become strong, before trunk chop. 1-2 years

I really hate the 90 degree angle of your proposed leader, also the angle at which it comes off the trunk, its too extreme imo.
I really like the angle change though.

Unless you can address the extreme angles, I honestly wouldnt chop it that far down and try to use something higher up as a new leader

Thanks man! Yeah I definitely don’t wanna be chopping anything if I haven’t given the leader time to strengthen up.

The only reason I went for that as the leader is due to the rest of the current trunk is fairly straight in that area as well as having no taper. I can see what your saying about the harsh angles but maybe as it thickens those angles will become less harsh.

The entire angle change was much needed, didn’t really have anything going for it.
