I have a few Japanese Larch and Deodar Cedar 2 year old seedlings. I wired last winter and took off before they bite in. They kept minimal shape. I want to wire again, however, I remember hearing it is bad to wire larch in the winter…maybe Bonsai Q?
My plan next spring is to put them out in the field to thicken up. Many Thanks.

Also, should I be watching out for barbel branches at this point? My though is making whorls similar to pines. Should I let other branches elongate? Thanks!

Fall in general is good time to wire because vascular tissues are going to grow the most in this season. Since Larch is deciduous conifer, maybe wait until the leaves drop but before temps drop to below 40F?

Thank you. Colors are just starting here, night time temps are lower 50’s. It’s very wet lately, I went ahead and wired them.
I do remember him saying that wiring in the winter was a myth to kill trees, however, Japanese larch is one species that shouldn’t be wire in the winter. Wish I could remember who said it 😂😂😂
