Jade lovers delight

Many of us have crassula ovate, a.k.a. Jade sitting around somewhere in a corner. And although we know it will never be a bonsai, still, they are fun plants. So I thought.. What not make a thread about jade. Your biggest, ugliest, oldest, youngest, techniques, experience, etcetc.

I'll kick of with a 2 year old cutting that I cam just have sit in a corner till winter. Then it will come inside. Maybe in a few years it wil start flowering. Would be nice.

Saw this picture earlier this week, and knew I had to post an update...

We have a 18month old Crassula Ovata and a one year old Crassula Arborescens. I will try and get some pictures but they are not very large and fabulous yet.

My mother used to have an absolutely magnificent Crassula Ovata which wa extremely OLD and very large. It truly was a sight to behold and had been in the family for decades before it was dropped during a house move and tragically never recovered.

I also have a friend who was gifted a very old, very thick one from a neighbor who was leaving and didn’t want to take it with. Unfortunately they are not very green fingered and managed to kill it within a few months. Sad really, I’d have loved it but they wouldn’t part with it and now it’s gone.

I should add that we have a Crassula Ovata Lemon& Lime cutting on its way from Spain and a Crassula Ovata Obliqua variegated cutting on its way from Poland.

So that brings our Jade collection up to 4 and no more. I’ve never been overly enthralled by Jade but my son likes them and they do make for a very easy to care house plant.

Our Crassula Ovata which grew from a small cutting that came from Malta

Our Crassula Arborescens “Silver Dollar”, parent plant is in a neighboring German city.

I’ll post the other 2 when they arrive from Spain and Poland. The will be very small as they were nicely cheap 😜 I feel like we have a bit of a Crassula United Nations going on here.

The Crassula Ovata “Lemon & Lime” arrived today from Lanzarotte, Spain. She mixed up the order with another and instead of 1 larger rooted cutting I got 2 smaller ones. No complaints from me as they’ll grow in time. Not sure what to do with the extra one, maybe my son can donate as his ”classroom plant” once it’s grown on a little more.
They arrived bare rooted so I potted them up right away.

I was browsing eBay yesterday when I spotted this beauty, wrong region for me. I’m also sure that’s “Gollum” not “Hobbit”.

It was mislabeled as Portulacaria afra
that is actually not mislabeled. it is indeed Portulacaria afra. they do have tiny leaves and actually reduce their leaves even more. our club mentor one with the tiniest leaves I've ever seen, maybe 3-4mm long

I'm building up a forest. Will do a repot as I want the trees closer together. And I want to try and do some wiring

Our little package from Poland arrived today. It was the nice rooted Crassula Obliqa cutting I had purchased plus a random surprise rooted cutting of something very variegated. I ran out of succulent earth and it doesn’t arrive until Monday so I will post pictures once they are potted up. Right now they are crammed into a small pot just so they are in something until they can be potted properly. They arrived bare rooted as is the normal.

Maybe someone can help me identify the mystery gift once I post pictures.

Ok so my succulent earth turned up early 🥳🥳

Here are our little Polish friends potted up.

Crassula Obliqua on the left, mystery gift on the right.

Close up on the mystery one, any ideas? I thought it might be the same as its parcel buddy but the leaves seem shorter. Also that’s a LOT of white going on there. Not sure how stable it will be.

Like all plants, or trees, Crassula don't develop as fast as they would when they stay in a small pot.
I took cuttings in 2017 (I take cuttings every year actually), gave one to my Mum, and it's about 40 cm high (about 16 inches), single trunk.
I took smaller cuttings that I put in a very small pot, they had not been repotted since today.
Fun isn't it?...

Still don't understand why people say P Afra "isn't real bonsai" but I'm a fan. Also have a ripple jade I love.

Re-wired and gave this guy a trim just yesterday:

Also wired and re-potted this little one the other day:

Have a thread on the contest forum for this forest, suppose I should update that soon.

Just curious, and I'm not trying to be a smart aleck, but it doesn't appear the wire is really doing anything, especially on the last two? I have never wired a jade, although I know some do. I guess i don't take mine too seriously.
