Seen while out hiking with my dog. It is in a national forest in an area that has been logged within the past couple of years. I was hiking down this gully that has a seasonal stream that is still somewhat flowing and was admiring the yamadori potential of the bent and broken trees from all of the downed logs on the hillside when I realized there were 5 needle pines mixed in with the lodgepoles. While looking at this one I saw the small orange patch on the trunk and then saw some on the lower trunk, too. I took a couple of photos but did not realize how much there was on the lower trunk until reviewing the photos while writing this post.

I saved the coordinates so I can let the Forest Service know in case they want to monitor the area or remove the tree.

I wouldn't rule out mechanical damage, there's a lot of dead wood lying around.
In the pimple one, you see the branch next to it having scrape marks, meaning something probably fell down on it. It could have hit the trunk.

I don't know the color of the resin of these pines, but sometimes it dries up yellow-orange.
