Cedar Apple rust or just bumps...?

Picture two has one that I sliced open.

I've only had rust show up on a San Jose in the foliage - this one is a small kishu and cutting the branch off would make me unhappy (it would essentially be half the trunk)

@Wires_Guy_wires is DMSO still a thing? I thought I remember you having success with it.

Rust galls are squishy. Those look pretty solid all the way through and surround by green cambium. Not a problem

I'm still investigating, it seems to work for a little bit, but the issue is that it freezes at just below room temperature.
What you're seeing here is rooting behavior. Rust almost never forms round nodules, as a matter of fact, I'm willing to put money on entirely never. It follows the sap stream, making egg-shaped or elongated lumps with irregular surfaces.

My general rule in junipers is: If it's round, don't worry about it.

Thanks - I've probably been watering the foliage too much hoping it would keep the spider mites away. Not that I've had an issue, but I hear they like kishu. Probably what is causing the bumps.

It's pretty dense and needs some thinning. Working on that now.
