Imported trees coming to the US

Wonder what is up with that?
I don't know...

I bet he was getting a lot of messages from people saying "how much is that one?" And stuff like that.

He said when he posted them it would take them a while to price them.

And that they're expecting another shipment in a week or two.

I'll hazard a guess they've all been priced and uploaded to his ebay store...http://stores.ebay.com/BonsaiSmith

And your guess would be wrong!

That's the ordinary stuff.

This batch (and the next ones) are JBP, and big maples.
Yeah, I took a quick look and didn't see any tree of real quality there, but assumed they'd be there...the tree's he's got listed there are jussssst a tad over priced imo.

Funny, I felt the Bonsai Tree Seed with Equally Mysterical Magical and Mythical Unicorn Egg, delivered by fairies was spot on...
Wonder if this was an Import as well?

Yea, I went through his whole ebay store today too and didnt see all of the awesome stuff from the recent imports.

Maybe he took the FB post down because he sensed it was causing jealousy and derision in the bonsai community

If I remember correctly on the FB page he said there would be an open house where people could pay for and reserve specific trees.

And I suspect he has a list of preferred clients that will get first choice. I don't know this to be true, but it's entirely likely.
No you're correct. Some of the imports are also part of pay/barter/etc. for rendezvous artists, or have been in the past.

Those posts (and pics) about the imported trees are still on facebook, they can be found on the "bonsai talk" group. You have to be a member of that group to see them. I don't know if all the pics are still there, but there's plenty.

Good! Glad to hear it. I just know that Bill Valavanis told me that he and several others had lost some nice JBP in his area a couple years ago. Due to cold. So, he was changing his attention away from JBP to pines like Svots that are more suited to his climate.

Sure, if you can adequately protect them, no problem. Unfortunately, many don't, and are disappointed when their tree dies. Other pines, more suited for cold conditions, may be hardier.

Yes, I think it was 2 winters ago (2013-14) that a bunch of people in the local club lost their black pines. We're talking about people who've been working with Bill for decades, who've had trees in national shows. In other words, very experienced. After talking to some of them, it sounds like many had been storing their black pines in unheated garages, and this worked well with the relatively warmer winters we'd been having. But the last 2 winters featured deep and prolonged cold, and apparently those garages got too cold. I know my garage will get down to 10-15 F at times and I wouldn't want a potted black pine exposed to that kind of temperature.

So it depends how many hoops you're willing to jump through to keep these trees happy. I didn't have any losses, but I use climate controlled shelters where the temp is kept above about 26-27 F. Even with that, I suppose it's possible that the winter conditions here could be slowly weakening my black pines. Time will tell.

11 pages with 210 posts and only a single tree in photo. Why all the mystery?
Because I'm the one who "stole" the picture off Facebook, and reposted it here, and I'm too lazy to copy all of them!

Here are a couple more:

Not trying to advertise for him per se, but I also have a question;

He mentions which are grafts (most of the conifers) and I understand that at some point a graft is done to get to the point of a "finished" bonsai sooner but isn't this something that people dislike? I mean in the case of JWP sion on a JBP base it doesnt sound bad but I guess I just don't get it. Are there other benefits of this or is it just a developement short cut.

Anyways, sorry to get tangential on this topic.

I'm pretty new here. I just wanted to vouch for Matt's trees and shipping service. The trident maple I purchased recently that I posted a thread about is from Matt (BonsaiSmith/Brussels?) and I like the tree, despite its flaws, even more in person and am thrilled with my purchase. I asked about the tree's origin and it is not (probably obvious) an import, but from an older gentleman who had sold off his stock/collection and the tree is perhaps 20 years old (or in training for 20 years), according to Matt. I just wanted to add that, since this thread just captured my interest, though no doubt the imported trees are all way out of my price range, but I was so surprised to see who the importer actually is!

Uh, no. The stuff on eBay your link sent me yo is the "ordinary" merchandise he always has available.

In Japan, there is an industry that grafts JWP onto JBP stock by the thousands. They do this because there is a particular strain of JWP that produces beautiful short blue-green needles. Grafting makes sure that's what you will get. JWP by seed can produce some with good needles, some with bad.

JWP on their own roots grow very slowly. Grafting onto JBP stock adds vigor, so they develop faster. They also graft "high", and use the stock JBP to be the main lower trunk. JBP "barks up" much much faster than JWP. It takes several decades for JWP to get "rough bark". Never mind about a plated structure. And another couple decades before it gets "plated" bark. JBP are much, much faster to develop.

Thanks that is very thorough and answers my questions.

For me personally I like the arsthetics of it. I love the look of a fat JBP trunk and I see nothing worg with it. I just am suprised purists also like this composition. But I guess if it wasnt for this then there would be far fewer JWP around.
