I went scouting in a patch of woods positively loaded with what I have been calling privet. Probably 70% of the trees are this species. The confusing thing is Google says Japanese privet or wax leaf privet rarely get over 20 feet tall. This bruiser was 50+ feet tall with an almost 5 foot base. I checked the leaves and they seem to match privet exactly. I have seen plenty of the small black fruits hanging on these trees in the past. Is this possibly a different species of privet. That walking stick is 5 feet long and is a couple of feet in front of the base, making the tree look a bit smaller.

With a little more research, I think what I have here is a glossy privet --ligustrum lucidum. 45 feet is considered the max height of these trees. I'd have to guess this one is a mite taller.

This is a somewhat smaller example, of which there are dozens in this patch of woods. Ordinarily, I would collect something like this come spring. I have a big "fairytale" privet coming along and I'm trying to limit my collection, which is about at 60 trees. This one is almost 12" across the flare.

Ligustrum would be smaller and have grey smooth bark. I would guess by the spreading and bark of tree 1 camphor trees, or maybe a little like cherry laurel based on sapling,
Do you smell the leaves?

I didn't smell the leaves from these particular trees, but there are many camphor trees in the area, and I can tell the difference by the shape and by the smell, if need be.

Found recently... Unable to identify in search does look like a young pivet?

Doesn't look like privet. Privets are evergreen..........they have leaves on them all year.
Similar... TX Live Oats are ...if it survive a fuller tree should tell a better story..Thank you
