Sapling
I am looking to collect a large-ish Balsam Fir or two this coming spring, along with maybe some hemlocks and tamaracks. Also, I am perfectly aware that you are supposed to trim the root ball and the tap roots on any species that you train and collect. However, I am wondering whether I should trim on site, before potting (in a trainer) or after a year of the tree sitting in its container. There seem to be a few views, but I am a little more cautious, especially when dealing with older and more mature specimens, as most of my work has been done with seedlings I will raise, and are more versatile and willing to accept their circumstances. Older trees are so picky and stubborn sometimes...
