Hi,
Recently I acquired my second hinoki cypress to be developed as bonsai from my local bonsai nursery. They have a large variety and good selection of hinoki's in all stages of development so I carefully inspected every tree prior to purchasing this one. The tree was rootbound, but its too late in the season for a full repot. I used a sharp knife to slice a thin layer of outer circling roots and removed sub 1/3 of the bottom soil mass. I've done this with my other trees that was too late for a proper repotting and non of them have skipped a beat. The soil medium its in is about a 50/50 floor dry pumice mix with a bit of sifted miracle grow.
I picked this tree as it had good quality nebari, lateral surface roots(buried in the photos), healthy lower inner foliage and branching. I would like to begin developing primary branches over the next few years and insure that my lower and inner branch stays vigorous. At the same time I would like the trunk to put on more girth and as such I want to avoid unnecessary pruning to encourage growth. Any tips regarding development would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Julian
