Scored my first Hinoki Cypress today at a local nursery. I think it's got tons of character and some interesting ramification to build upon. I can tell its been neglected a bit - root bound, an old tag on the trunk was cutting into the bark a bit and looks like its been left out in direct sunlight for some time. But for $45 it's an exciting project. I've already done some very minor root work - potted it up in a slightly larger nursery container surrounded by with mostly pumice, and a tiny bit of compost, perlite and slow release fertilizer. Gave it a good soak, mist, and put it in the shade alongside some of the other trees I'm babying at the moment (see my post re: western hemlock). I think this could make a beautiful formal upright someday.
