Healing a large wound

Why try and heal it over ?
I think it looks awesome carve it out and seal it off with super glue to harden it and preserve it and put it as a feature in the design
I like the healing over thing and I hope it works. Isn’t the goal of most bonsai to be deadwood free after all? Saying that, I do love deadwood on bonsai, but a reskinning looks right in this case.

I think turning it into a uro would look perfectly natural if done correctly
You’re probably not wrong, but is that not mainly a British thing to incorporate deadwood everywhere? I think sometimes there is more artistry in managing to cover it up.

I think for me it is partially the challenge and learning what works and what doesn't. Decaying wood stops healing over, I have now learned. Let's see whether cement is a base over which it will grow bark if pushed.

Not really a “British thing” per say. More like there are British guys known for their deadwood work

Aha I see. That makes sense. I wondered where the reputation came from TBH, but I have seen a lot of British trees with lots of deadwood features. They’re generally the trees I prefer the most as well, I wondered if it was because so many of the old trees in Britain are beaten up gnarled old things with loads of deadwood. It’s just what we’re used to.

Well I like it. It’s funny what trees will grow around. Will you open the wound to encourage callousing on the edge or just keep applying paste?

Traditionally you don't want deadwood on a maple. But it can be and definitely is done all the time. I think that if you can heal it over I would, but if it needs to end up being a deep hollow that is pretty interesting as well.

In early spring I take a wire brush and gently brush the edges of the wound before covering the whole area with cutpaste. In late summer I do this again. "tickling" the cambium layer to push.

Thats has a lot to do with it. But guys like Dan Robinson have been doing it for a long time too
