Growing jbp from seed. Advise needed

Anybody know of a link with some info on starting Japanese black pine from seed... Everything from scarification and stratification (if needed) to soil to germinate in, time of year, etc etc. I need to learn everything. Just ordered 60 seeds!

There's a 6 year japanese pine contest going on, on this forum.
Over there you can see nearly every method applied.
Jbp can use some stratification. So it's best to start that before spring. The best germination medium I've seen in the contest, based on the health and vigor of the seedlings, was peat moss mixed with perlite. But I've found they germinate OK in almost everything.

I find that JBP seed germinates well without stratification. I just germinate them in my standard bonsai mix.
Just work your way through the JBP contest. As Wires Guy Wires says there's almost everything in those threads and you can see the results after a year. pine contest

Make seedling cuttings if you can.....dip&grow works good.Works faster in a propogator with a thermostat heat mat at 75-85f and single t5 light.
Mine rooted in a month from sewn seed to cutting on a few of them,the rest of them about 6 weeks from sewn seed.
I would get a few hundred more seed too.

Can grow early indoors just fine under at least 4 -t5 6500k full spectrum.Blue spectrum enhanced is best ay 18 hrs light.When sprouting seeds and cuttings ,24 hours is best till they harden off after cutting.
My first batch were in improper humidity,nutrients and everything and they are still good to go come spring ...maybe a little needle tips drying out.The needles are kind of expendable anyway.

I should have many for sale come Spring if everything works out.Hopefully on ebay in 10 packs or less.

Well that’s good to know. I’ll just plant them when I get them then and see what happens. I have a tropical room I can throw them in until spring

Dan, either soak them for 24hr or place in a coffee filter and pour a gallon hot water, about 140f, over them before you plant.. I've used both methods and they are equally effective.

Wow those look amazingly healthy! I hope mine turn out ok. I don’t normally have good success with seeds. I can’t imagine trunk chopping the little bastards at such a young age.

Is there a advantage to chopping the whole top and regrowing all new roots, vs just cutting the tap root and forcing smaller side shooting roots to take over??

I used to think the same thing.My first crop last year turned out great with just trimmed tap roots like you suggested(first photo).....Trust me,seedling cuttings are more vigorous from the start and also branches right from the roots in some cases which opens the possibility to make multi trunk or clump like trunks.........or at least fatter bases......if you like that sort of thing.

Just use links and suggestions I posted above....at least 50% success.Buy at least an ounce of seed though!!

I have some that are just starting to root literally right out of bottom needles!! Although ones in pictures have not yet....I am still learning.....they are recuts.
