And a slight diagonal from front left that I may consider for front after lower branches are cleaned up.

Graft, and the leftover bit of the rootstock:
View attachment 326256
I had a feeling it would be there if anywhere would you call it unsightly enough to plan around it being on the front? Now that you point it out I can see where that little arc continues in the other Pic too hiding among the wrinkles. In my noob opinion it's tough to see in the front side if I could clean up the nub.
Any way to tell what the root stock might be or what to expect from it?

Yeah I was reading through the @Vance Wood tutorial for Mugo and saw the repot in summer in the notes. I'm currently on the don't do it side of the fence. I'd rather wait, than go for a "might still be OK" it looks like we're about a month out from first frost I am reading though that these wintergold Mugo are hardy to zone 2. Basically I could keep it in my deep freeze over winter. 🤣

Dont repot it now. You are in Utah and it is too close to cold winter temperatures to repot now. The tree wont have time to recover and grow roots before then. Trees will be starting to slow thier growth down soon as we get colder temperatures and days start getting shorter. Wait until next year. If you want to do something, you can do some wiring this fall.

Sap is really slow in my pines now. I agree.

That's not risky, that's a safe place to be.

What you can do however is 1st the Irish moss if not already, and the 2 or 3 cuts I mentioned.

On the right keeper branch just cut the new shoot back. New buds will form next Spring if I remember Vances tutorial correctly.
That branch is thicker than the 1st Left branch, and left to go in the same direction/vigour, will never change that.
Sooner the better.
The opposite branch(es) will need to go for whatever design comes, and why not put that energy into keepers and back buds?
Leave 1/4" stub there and seal it. + it's part of at least a 3 way whorl which will thicken at the trunk more and more every year.
That said, the 2 lowest branches, leave them opposite each other to build the cultivar closer to the root stock thickness, though
taper is good, you'll know when to lop off the inside curve branch and other small branch at the union.
Any way to tell what the root stock might be or what to expect from it?
Could be another Mugo, could be Scotts pine. Not really, not knowing. Hopefully they don't get out of sync too bad
but coming from nursery, they are probably not grafted for bonsai use, and in the landscape it doesn't really matter for most folks.

So they had 10 of them huh? I would be willing to pay sh/h if you could pick such a similar nice specimen and ship it my way.
How much are they charging for this 1 gallon? size?

@ProfessorFarnsworth
How's your wiring skills???
We normally refer folks to the Craftsy site which redirects to mybluprint.com
This site is currently being updated, and expected to relaunch Sept. 1st or soon thereafter.
So ATM the free wiring class or any other craftsy of bluprint class is not available, but soon will be.
Check it out through the week and enter into their search bar

"Bonsai Wiring Essentials with Colin Lewis"

Here is a quick look 1 min video advertising it. You will add the free class when the site's up, to your cart and sign into new membership, FREE.
Nice thing, is you can pause the video, and make quick notes along the time line for your own personal quick reference whenever you want.
Colin Lewis sounds so much like Sean Connery talking, and has a great personality as a teacher.

Honestly it was $21.99+tax which is one of the cheaper I've bought. There was one near identical to this and I wouldn't mind shipping one if I could figure out how to safely do it. They said they had just got a shipment in and that was a few days ago so I'm not 100% what will be left when I make it back but the Mugo section is always stocked. They get conifer shipments really often though so I'm sure if nothing else they'll have more. I'll take a look when I stop by later in the week. It's about a 45 minute drive and won't be able to make before close till Thursday or Friday.

It's not up yet and nothing to subscribe to, just a quick intro
Awesome I'll check that out. I'm definitely trying to get it all figured out. When I started this hobby I had no idea the rabbit hole would get so deep lol

I would put it in a box near the same height + 2" of peanuts on the bottom space.
Place 2 small bamboo sticks, one through each side of the root ball at the pots edge to top of inside of box.
placing atop 2" of peanuts or bubble wrap then fill the box with peanuts.
Sent Priority Mail works great!
If you don't have the shipping supplies and took measurements of yours, I would be glad to ship you the empty box and supplies.
Just shoot me a PM and will figure out PayPal or something.
There's just nothing around here that carries anything like that really, and would really appreciate the effort :)

Yeah one of the ladies at the nursery has an in with a conifer grower she previously worked for so they get some stuff you don't see that often I guess plus she's a wealth of information! I'll let you know if there is anything left worth buying.

Here's my 4 mugos. The 4th or last one is the one I have that is grafted to Scots Pine.
I always spell that with 2 t's Scotts incorrectly, just habit.
Anyway you either have a good eye, for picking good nursery stock
or have a good supplier for such. Maybe the cultivar makes such a difference over most others
that are simply very very few and even further between to find well placed branches as such.
BTW I'm also looking for Golden Hinoki particularly Lynns Golden in 1 gallon size with low close in foliage.
They have a 3 tone foliage from green to yellow to cream.

This one really balked at my wiring last year, and I'd like to find one to have as a back up.

I'm sure I've missed some cool stuff I didn't even know to look out for. I've walked right by the Mugos quite a few times because the ones they always have up front are super dense kind of bird nest style. So I hadn't really thought about walking through.

I like the color change. Beautiful.

Variegated and "dragon eye" color forms of pines are usually "frowned upon" by the "old guard" of bonsai purists. But this is a nice even color, and quite attractive. If you could get this color evenly distributed over the whole tree, it could make a very attractive specimen.

Thanks! I guess I didn't really know that but I'm not so surprised they are kind of frowned upon. I'm really enjoying the color change but I'm starting to think about how you choose a pot for a color changing pine. I'll keep posting updates as the change continues!

How about a partially glazed one, one with a lythe yellow stroke over it?

I do like that idea! When I first bought it late summer it did already have some yellow in the tips of the needles so I'm not 100% sure it goes full green ever. The little yellow accent could tie that in nice.

SOmeone here has a Ginkgo with a custom pot, which includes a yellow wedge. @Cadillactaste I think.
