Full Moon Maple Development

Wow! I was just searching Shirasawanum and found your progression! Very awesome progression! How tall is it?

So here's a fall color report. Last fall the leaves simply turned brown and didn't fall off.....???? I had to cut them off. This year, 60% of the leaves fell off green in September as they did in post #70. The few that did stay on for the cool weather did this! I really think it's an issue of the root mass developing to bring on the color. I'm going to put it in a larger pot next spring to increase the root mass as well as more visual balance.

awesome thread and work. Very nice progression. Those full moon leaves are so cool all season long.

Great detailed and informative thread. Thank you! Two questions, what kind of a substrate are you using for the Full Moon Maple, and where did you find that purple pot? I love the subtle color and that slight corner look on both sides right above the feet of the pot. Thanks again for documenting and sharing your journey with this fascinating maple variety.

As promised, a new larger pot this spring. It's more of an eggplant purple with some slight crystallization. This glaze breaks quite nicely to create the pinstriping on the lip and foot. After two years in the old pot it was more than ready for some root work. The area around the ground layer is solid with roots to a point where a chopstick won't penetrate. After looking at this photo I think the tree could tilt a little to the right.

That deep purple is oo-la-la🥰

Would you ever consider ground layering or air layering the graft ? Is that a graft?
I do suspect it is a graft. The lower portion is much darker when the tree gets wet. The swell really doesn’t bother me and I don’t imagine it becoming more obvious over time. The results of trying to layer the original scion may not be so successful, which is why it was grafted and not struck as a cutting.
