First styling and repot for a Japanese Maple

See if you can find Peter Adams' Bonsai With Japanese Maples. He's got a section that starts with material much like what you're starting with now.

the top half of your tree looks like some very good variety, I would’ve tried to do something to save it for example air layering. The variety of your lower part is unknown.
Yes i had thought about it for awhile could have been a good learning tree for some air layering. But while I was letting the trunk get thicker over the years and listening to others about having a back up plan with the flawed tapper I wanted to get the next phase stared ASAP. Thanks for the reply I hope it does recover.
 
I hope it buds out for you. 🤞🏻That was terrible bonsai material as it was. Sometimes you've got to go for broke and go all in.
Yes the flaw on the trunk line wasn't going to get better. I rolled the dice so hopefully my luck will be good.
