I knew it looked familiar! I didn’t read the thread it was posted on, I had read it previously and signed up for notifications.. but when he said “picked up” I just assumed he bought another lol. Ignore me.

Hi guys, yep same tree. what im thinking of doing currently is to completely cut off the short left stub and create a hollow that joins to the shari from inside. then reducing the right trunk to the branch below. then reducing the main trunk so its length is approx 10cm, or slightly more... the result would be a twin trunk, bit similar to that B oki tree, but ill assess everything first and make sure im doing the right thing. this was discussed with Ken in the shop and he has a far more experienced eye than me.

Hello mate, this one hasnt really worked out how i'd of liked....it went through a few reductions

mainly tried to get some taper into the stump, but when i think back i probably should of left a little more on the subtrunks

it didnt back bud as strongly as i would of liked and growth on the main subtrunk was weak
so i reduced it further and put it in the grow bed

its going into its second year in the ground now, will just hedge prune it while its in the bed.....
ill probably sell it once the new crown is developed, as i have a much better zelkova im working on and dont have space for this one.
this will still be a great little stump in a few years, you certainly dont see many powerful zelkova stumps

I’m even more curious now to see what you do with the stump. I have a situation also. I have a Hackberry Celtis Sinensis that seems to have died back to a stump. The Hackberry is about 15.5 cm just above the soil and the live portion remaining is about 28 cm tall. There are some buds, not many, and a good sign of the tree attempting a comeback. Your carving shows me that there is a potential opportunity.....for something to be made....from something not totally attractive at first glance. Mighty fine work you’ve done!

My Hackberry was chopped back a few weeks ago with an anticipation of a side branch taking over as the next section.....didn’t happen. Now I have a stump.

there is always something to be made from a stump mate, whether it be an ugly stump or an attractive stump. this zelkova is now an ugly stump, it will be left to grow out and then cut back, it will gain character. it will start to look good and someone will appreciate it. i have too many projects.
the carved out hollow isnt really the front. the front will be the original shari in earlier images, just needs to fill out and it will look great from all around, once the crown is developed. this will happen quickly in the grow bed.

ive got this one back in a pot....
it didnt do as well as id liked in the grow bed.might have got a bit dry.branches are a little leggy and were clipped back a little.
i actually lifted it out with a mind to sell, but ive decided im going to keep it, so its back on my balcony, i may sell one or two others and continue to develop this i think it has great potentiol....

on the subject of Zelkova....
this one is another keeper....
it was dug up recently, but i was able to lift it without any cutting of roots as it didnt establish much.
ive since slashed a little off the base to get it in this pot, which is suitable for developing the crown while looking fairly decent.
im using the same feeding regime and its in the process of sending out a flush, buds popping now from the recent pruning, over winter can get some order in the branching
this one is another keeper....

i didnt tame this one too much, goin to exercise more of a hedging method on it.
i only removed clustering branches of more than two at any one point, tidied up old pruning stubs.stumps like this can be treated a little different and this also requires plenty more thickening in the main branches, so ive left most of the extension on the tree, next season will let it go again and maybe shear everything back late in the season, a bit similar to how i treated my Chinese elm broom on here.at some point everything will be cut back very short, to get that taper and angular movement...

I like it for a hard hedge cut 1-2 times a year based on vigor with branch selection like you did. I think after a few years of that you will have an interesting informal broom with decent taper.

You had a very nice trunk line after initial reductions. I would have been very happy to have something like that to work with.

Maybe make a selection of the new trunkline and main branches. Lightly wire them. Remove the rest. Then put the thing in the groud for 2 years to get a big push on it?

this one just had its second cut back of the season. somewhat of a hedge job
a few months ago i did this...
it grew back and today it was hacked back again, a little denser after the second cut back, ive also removed unwanted bits..

Question is, if it makes sense to let it grow without cutting back. If you have space of course. And based on what is your desired design for the future.
