Extended season starting trees indoors

About 32 Jbp seedling cuttings.I am going to do these more often in smaller batches...takes too much time....too much dust in house also.
I always keep only full rooted cuttings.
These get low nitrogen/high mono ammonium phosphate to build roots first for about a month. Then they grow very vigorously when I up the nitrogen a bit later on.Makes HUGE differance in all plants you start yourself.
These were in propogator for 24 days rooting.

Coreana hornbeam seeds........about 150-200 sprouting.Curious to see how these do.Going to try with mother formula to see how they make seedling layers....if not,I will just sell them.Be vigorous starts nontheless. These will also get starter root formula for a bit after transplanting.

Ok,I foliar fed and drenched the tree again today.Filled the cloner.
I like these are somewhat soft, but turgid enough to regenerate upright.
These hawthorne stems turn woody very quick,so I catch them just at right time.
Dipped for over 20 minutes at 20% strength dip&grow!!
And of course cover with the dome and mist inside the dome daily to maintain about 80% humidity.
Will definately help.
Some have more than 4 nodes in the resevoir!

Loads of Carpinus Coreana(korean hornbeam).
These are the more dwarf form of korean hornbeam. It is essentially a different form of ‘turczaninowii’ with she shorter leaves and internodes and such.Usually slow at first, but should grow faster indoors.
More sprouting than I thought...I always did like these.Something finniky about these.Seems they grow better with proper everything!
One of the first trees to let you know something is out of wack...in my experiance anyway.Extremely thirsty trees when lots of leaves too ,will dry out in an instant with dead terminals from dehydration.

Zelkova aeroponics.

These roots are getting bigger.Very cool.
Also I discovered that the Hawthorne need to be quite turgid ,but still greenwood or semi-ripe.
The soft ones probably would’ve rooted quicker but they didn’t hold up the wilting and I lost about half of them there’s plenty out on the tree in the yard and I am preparing them with foliar spray so maybe tomorrow or the next day I’ll fill them in.
The remaining ones have the start of Callous and microscopic root hairs growing here and there..... they’re coming out of stomata and such I thinks that this will happen the ends are Callousing too.

Red Hawthorn aeroponics 10-14 days in.

Ok at 10-14 days I am getting nice callousing and hopefully roots real soon.Awesome!!
That is fast for ‘Pauls Scarlet’ Hawthorn🤪
Dome seems essential and also a mist of water daily.Along with an air conditioned room.
Water is at 70 F this morning and also ph down every morning to 5.7-5.9 for best rooting.

The batch above were dip&grow 20x strength(weak) for 15-20 minutes👍

Stuck a bunch more with slightly riper wood at 10x strength (mid strength) for 15-20 minutes...I will find out if that improves things faster👍

Zelkova aeroponic propogation.

I was excited to make these today.Had a spare cloner ,so made about 30 cuttings.
The mother seems very good.It has been prepped for over a month now and only fed .3 EC mother nutrient and growth stalled under less intense light.
Tons of foliar feeds also.
The internodes were excellent with all the cuttings having 3-5 nodes IN THE RESEVOIR!!
That will increase rooting big time👍
dip&gro 15-20 minutes at 10x strength. And my usual recipe for the resevoir.
Made a homemade dome to retain humidity.

Thanks @cmeg1 great product! Im a ding dong and didnt realize you included instructions until after I tore off those pouches off the roots and potted them. My plan is to progressively move them into bigger pots as they grow since I need to move them into the shed for cold snaps in the winter. I have no idea what the ph of my soil is but its lava rock, expanded shale, napa, and a bit of orchid potting soil.

They will survive...still mainly a hydro soil...so lots of water and ph the nutrient with a digital meter.
5.8-6.4
If u do not ph the nutrient solution they will suffer unnecessarily.

5:2 ratio fulvic/kelp dip experiment with cuttings.

These red hawthorne cuttings are calloused up pretty good in the aeroponic cloner, some just beginning,so wanted to experiment with rooting concentrate.Namely fulvic acid/kelp at 5:2 ratio. My go to root stimulator among other things.
My teacher advised sqirting a heavy consentration directly on stems after callous, but I went ahead and am letting these stay submerged for at least an hour or up to 4 hrs in regular maintanance strength...like getting watered.
The cytokenins are great at initiating cell division to get roots popping when your at callous formation.
Hopefully soak into soft stem for any beginnings of callous under the cambium👍.
Fulvic acid efficiently transports the kelp plant growth elements directly into the plant cells in as little as 4 hours.......hense the reason I went with regular strength...don’t know till you try.
If this works I will advance it to a more streamlined system.
They are also kept misted for their duration out on the counter.

@cmeg, do you know if Aluminum Sulfate can be used to bring the PH down?

@cmeg, do you know if Aluminum Sulfate can be used to bring the PH down?
Don’t know....I woykd find ur local hydro store...general hydroponics have been around since the 70’s
I only usually need about 2-7 drops per gallon of ph down with my formulas.

Totallt worth the effort...they will get the iron they need for photosynthesis among oter micro elements

16 days zelkova aeroponic propogation

There are actually roots popping on one of them while the rest are callousing.16 days...not bad.

The red hawthorne are nearing a month with lots of callous.I believe they will eventually push roots!
Worth the time.

You make my propagation attempts look weak 😅
Ha ha....takes practice.Im learning still. For instance , half of the red hawthorne were cut way to long....best to have only 2” into the resevoir.
I may pull them out and re-cut.As they are callousing up higher👍
All my recipe and all are posted above for this batch.

pines in a few weeks

still waiting for seed from schumacher...expected June.I already have my order in for alot...like a 1/4lb.
That is good though because their seed sprouts from zero in a week and stores quite long.I always soak in fulvic acid and kelp over night before sewing.
Anyway these seedling cuttings are in 1000ppm of co2 and should be ready in a few weeks.
Can also see several hundreds of coreana hornbeam also that will get potted into small rootpouch and put up for sale.

How much is 1/4lb of seeds by volume? Have you tried a comparison of with/without kelp to see how much of a difference it makes?

Hi.
About 6000 seeds.I guess fwschumacher have fresh seed(why they actually run out of supply).
They sprout with no pretreatment.
Never tried without.Kelp has gibberellins which re responsible for first chemical reactions in embryonic germination of the seed.Fulvic acid is a low molecular weight humic substance that will penetrate cell membranes fairly easily( if not a few hours in plant leaf cells).
I personally believe the seed membranes do open in the seems of fresh seed to let the kelp penetrate in a 24 hour soak.
Every time I use it I get very good germination rates. The black pine actually sprout in 4 days!!
