Evolution of a Seiju elm from 2015

I first watched the pictures before reading your message - probably a recurring habit from when I was 5 or 6 🥴

At first I thought that you would tie them together, like some "fusion" project to make a massive trunk. Actually, I'm pretty sure most, if not all of them will take.

I might try some work with the two I have, I'll let you know.

PS : I'm not sure we are in the same climate zone : why don't you specify a nearby big city in your profile (I live near Orléans, USDA zone 8a, rapidly becoming 8b).
I mean, the seasons are not exactly the same in Burgos, Almeria or Santander... ;)

Actually I did something similar with root cutting of ulmus parvifolia (no variety know) some years ago:

and It worked!!

But that's another story, and with cuttings you never know....;)

Excellent ! The kind of work I like, and it's coming along very nicely. 👍 👍 👍

Probably drier and warmer in summer than here, but somewhat similar.

Can maples survive where you live ? I have a few dozens that I'll have to give up, 1-2 yuear-old seedlings, if you're interested, I can send you some in the spring : bare-rooted, for shipping potted ones -even in plastic pots- can be expensive.

I'll post an "offer" later for those in Europe who may be interested. I'll just ask for the postage price and 1 or 2 €uros for the plastic wrap. To be disposed of in the yellow bin afterwards 😄

Thanks so much for the offer, your´re so kind, but I have more projects that space, I wish I had more space but.....I'm afraid I must reject.

Cheers!

😄 I love the soundtrack!!!

It's very encouraging. I would have made a more diagonal cut though, and wire the new leader in the popposite direction: Right -> Left, instead of L ->R. I think this way you can make it vertical more easily.

Of the two I have, I pruned the first one rather drasicly and it shows no buds yets but the other one does.

I think there's another thread on "Seiju elms" where I already posted mine, I'll check that and post pics later not to hijack your thread ;)

Well the upper branch is IMHO too thin, so I didn't want run any risk making the cut too diagonal. There will be plenty of time to adjust it. Anyway, it could appears some new bud in the ring of the cut more appropriated for continue the trunk line, so the apex is still in "the air".

By now I'm more concern about the places where the new branches pop....but with a vigorous elm like this, there's not much to concern about, the main problem is to have too many buds in wrong places, maybe.

Thanks for yours comments.

This thing is crazy strong!!
