Gabler

You deserve an MD license plate for this surgery. Great work as always Serg.
For a minute there, I was trying to figure out why this would qualify someone for a Maryland license plate.

After three years since this peg graft process was started, the moment has finally come!
Since the branch by now was fully fused 360, I felt confident it was time to separate it from its grafted young maple sapling that helped sustain it all along.

Separation was carefully done with a fine tooth saw.

Separation complete! The relocated branch will continue to be sustained from the parent tree leaving behind what was its life support for so long.

And now with the remaining stub cleaned up. Testing the structural integrity of the graft, the branch feels very solid and set to continue growing and developing. The graft line will fade and blend in with time.

The maple overall is growing strongly this year. Hoping that next year it will be potted back into a bonsai container as it is time to start slowing it down. The development of the apical region on the main trunk is a point of focus this year.

The peg graft completed this year and the graft is solid. I expect it to grow and develop much like any other branch moving forward.
Sharing a pic the previous owner sent me from 2013.

Here it is now from a couple of nights ago. Next year will keep focusing on laying out the apical region on the tallest trunk. Closing of the large scar at the bottom left continues to progress forward. No work has been done yet in terms of wire, clean up, etc but looking really nice coming out of the growing season all on its own.

When I head over to help repot this beast in 2024That's looking absolutely fantastic. This thread has inspired me to try a few branch relocations next year. When do you envision moving the tree into a bonsai pot?

Really cool, Sergio. Thanks so much for documenting the progression on this technique. That nebari is off the hook, btw

Thanks for the thread, lots of effort to put it together on your part. As we discussed via Zoom, I think I have found a situation that calls for this approach. The tree does require more prep and recovery before beginning though. It is an ingenious technique worth trying when the right situation calls for it
