Dog days are here in Southeast TX

This is exactly why i've tried to buy only tropical trees down here while I learn lmao.
Even Ficus are struggling. F. Religiosa leave are all burnt. Willow leaf are doing better. Japanese maple, Trident and Ume are mostly leafless. Will be in this state for another two months or so.
Desmodium is fair much better in this heat. I love it... Will focus on this specie more going forward.

But isn't TX always like that in August ???
This year it seems to stay cooler for longer in Spring but once Summer came it is definitely hotter. The string of triple digits days are much longer than other years.
Well all I can do is watering as much as I can and hoping for the best.

I haven't been back since 2016. I was there during Xmas so it was relatively cooler then but it was still damn hot. I guess I have been softened since coming over well passed 30 years mark. With temp over 100 and out in the sun is unbearable these days. Feel bad for the trees...

And you have a bunch of those. I force mine to experience MI. :) I only have one. They all (most trees) shut down over 90F right?

I don't see that. Over 90 F my JM suffers greatly. Even when placed in a spot with just a few hours of morning sun and watered well, the JM maples dry out. However, the BCs, oaks, ilex, Chinese elms, Mayhaws, and all my tropical trees still grow well and have no issues. Only when the temperatures get above 95 degrees F would I see a slowdown in those trees.
However, when it gets around 100 degree F or more like this week in SE TX & SWLA, the trees are obviously under stress. The JM are dying. I am taking them to total shade today.

I asked @Clicio how he manages to keep his JMs nice in his zone, he uses 50% shade cloth over them. I'm building a small frame so I can place the shade in the hotter months and take it off without too much disruption. My pines are loving the heat and so far only my ficus in small pots are the ones showing yellow leaves in addition to the chojubai. Weird that the trident is looking great, and the JMs under the trident and the cherry tree are doing great with maybe a 10% or less leaf burn. I have a collected seedling of unknown species (rough bark, very small white single flowers before leaf out in spring) that is suffering and I will be moving it today to a dappled shade area.

The shade cloth was a turning point for my Maples.
70% less leaf burn this year.
